A Kindle Book with Ligature Issues
Posted June 16th, 2010 @ 04:36pm by Erik J. Barzeski
Every instance - every single one - of the ligatures in the book "Unplayable: An Inside Account of Tiger's Most Tumultuous Season" for my Kindle has an issue with ligatures. Most commonly this is "fl" - lowercase "F" and an "L" character next to each other (or "fi" - "F" and "I").
As you can see from the screenshot below, when reading a golf book the ligature issue is quite, uhm, noticeable.
I've filed a support request with Amazon. I'll update this blog entry when they respond.

That looks more like a typo...

As I said, every ligature in the book is like this. I don't know how many times I've read the word "fag" instead of "flag." I stopped counting.

Every ligature in the book except "flawless" 4 lines up...
Someone must have gotten creative with a find and replace for the word "flag" for some reason. I would be leaning towards typo as well. Malicious typo would be hard to say.

Yeah, you're right. But I've seen other words with "fl" that are just "f" as well. It's not just the word "flag." But yeah, it's apparently not just ligatures. Hmmm.
Amazon said they'd try to fix it but made no guarantees at all.
