Mac OS X 10.6.6 – Unknown File Dialog – Default Choice is App Store

I haven't seen anyone point this out yet - since Mac OS X 10.6.6 double-clicking an unknown file now presents this dialog box to the user:

App Store Unknown File

Hmmmmmmm.

  1. Isn't that the bast way to get high numbers and then announce that the product has been adopted ?

  2. Ludovic, I'd say it's the best way to let users search for an application that opens the file type.

  3. Hmmmmm indeed. Looks like a surefire way to get more people into the store... at the cost of usability for a pretty common dialog box (ie. you now have to pick the option that's stuck where one usually finds the "cancel" button). In a way it's good because obviously there are a lot of files that new users don't know how to open, and this provides a quick way to do it, but man. That Apple revenue machine is something else.
