Sometimes Customers Forget to Tip. They’re Human. Get Over It.

This sign hangs in our local Smokey Bones restaurant.

Smokey Bones

I think it's rude. It's condescending and, well, rude.

The same night, the waitress forgot to put Carey's order in. I was halfway done with my meal before she got her Buffalo chicken fingers.

Now, obviously she wasn't going to flip out over something like this, but "get over it"? That's just rude. Customers - CUSTOMERS - have every right to get mildly bothered by a server forgetting something. It's part of their job.

Imagine you telling your boss to "get over it" when you fail to do something that's part of your job.

This sign, by the way, bothers me a lot more than any time a server forgot anything. It's representative of a poor attitude.

P.S. We still tipped ~20% of the original cost (pre-coupons). The post title is not indicative of our actions.

  1. Wow I agree with that completely. It's almost like an assured thing that service will suck. Pretty awful in my opinion. If someone forgets something, an honest apology goes a much further than a sign like that.

Absolutely. I don't know where this resturant is or how often you frequest it, but as long as it didn't severly impact my normal "eating out" routine, I'd make sure management knew that that sign was a reason I wouldn't be coming back again. The statment is almost like saying, "your expiriance here will suck, and we just don't care." May as well comp me a dessert up front.

  3. I think the intention was to be a response to any future overly rude customers who scream at their server for mundane things like forgetting to put ice in their drinks, ect.

As a server, I'd love it if people could understand I'm human, I make mistakes but I try my very best to give you great service.

However, the "Get Over It" part was rude, I agree. Yes, servers are human and make mistakes, but a restaurant telling you to just "Get Over" bad service is unacceptable and simply bad for business.

  4. I absolutely love this sign. Some people may consider it rude however, there is no point to stay angry about an honest human mistake. Most servers try to do their best and sometimes there are circumstances out of their control that you cannot see. Instead of being angry about a sign wait and see how the establishment handles the situation. If they handle it outstandingly I would much rather go to that place again over somewhere which disregarding any concerns I had.

  5. Sally, I think it's fine to a point, but telling people to "get over it" is just unnecessarily rude. It doesn't set very good expectations and almost excuses a server before they've even made a mistake.

I'd prefer that the restaurant assume people don't get their panties in a wad and need to be told to "get over it."
