QotD: Automator

Question: Are you using any Automator scripts or actions yet?

My Answer: No. I think Automator will be much like AppleScript - utilized heavily by some, under-utilized by the vast majority (most of whom won't even know it's there).

  1. I'm not using it yet, either. I like to think I'll get around to using it for image resizing and uploading to the blog or things like that, but so far, I haven't found the time.

Also, cute "Carey" button there! And I like the new design, too.

  2. I tried it on the dev seed, and it was really slow. Doesn't look like it's sped up much since.

  3. I did a quick and dirty to label aliases, from a cold start and without resorting to documentation.

This is going to be as big as Spotlight.

  4. No, because it hangs when I try to use it for importing into iPhoto.

  5. Once the UI issues are worked out and a critical mass of actions are deployed, Automator will hit it big. Just not much anytime soon.

  6. I've used it some. It's nice to be able to make some quick additions to the Finder's contextual menu (I've made an "Add to file comments" workflow, for example, to allow me to quickly append text to multiple files' spotlight comments)

It's also good for adding stuff to the Print dialog's PDF workflow menu.
