I'm still investigating ways to pick up an iPhone 5 at less than "full price" (and possibly even less than upgrade price, by trading in my iPhone 4S), but I must say I'm surprised at how disappointed some people are by both iOS 6 and the iPhone 5. Both are exactly what Apple does best: […]

Unlike this author/, I don't think Apple needs to fix anything. The ringer switch and DND work beautifully. The one thing that confused me at first was that the DND setting actually switches from "ON" to "OFF" when it's not on. I thought my settings were being changed, but what the software is actually doing […]

Buying an iPhone 5 in England

My next upgrade to the iPhone 4S is in May or something, but I'm wondering if I was able to buy an iPhone 5 in England if that would "work" for me. The phone(s) are the same (I have AT&T service), right? I'd get the wrong kind of plug, but that would be easily remedied. […]

New Kindles

Seriously considering getting a Kindle Paperwhite to replace my second-gen Kindle. Any good reason to get a different model? WiFi plentiful. — Erik J. Barzeski (@iacas) September 11, 2012

NASA Touches Down on Mars

Netflix’s Lost Year

What's most interesting to me about Netflix's "lost year" is both that so many of the company's executives saw the disaster coming and that the disaster was just as bad as they thought: The price hike and the later, aborted attempt to spin off the company's DVD operations enraged Netflix customers. The company lost 800,000 […]

Higgs-Boson FAQ

Nice little article for those who are interested. 😀

Higgs Boson Found?

Quite possibly.

DVDs and Warnings

The Man keeps sticking it to us: http://daringfireball.net/linked/2012/05/09/unskippable http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/05/dvds-and-blu-rays-will-now-carry-two-unskippable-government-warnings/ And they wonder why piracy keeps getting higher and higher. With piracy, you don't have to watch these stupid warnings. 😛

Pebble Watch

I've joined as a backer for the Kickstarter Pebble. I like my iPod Nano watch a TON, but this looks far and away like the next level. Update (04/22): It's now reached $6M and shows no signs of stopping.

Bezos Finds Shuttle Engines

I like it when really really rich people spend their money on things that benefit more than just themselves. NASA is one of the few institutions I know that can inspire five-year-olds. It sure inspired me, and with this endeavor, maybe we can inspire a few more youth to invent and explore.

iBooks Author Kerfuffle

I don't understand the kerfuffle over the iBooks Author EULA. Apple is not claiming rights to your text or illustrations. They're simply claiming that if you use their authoring tool to put together an interactive book, you must either give it away free or sell it via the iBookstore. If you want to use another […]

Understanding SOPA/PIPA

I'm opposed to SOPA/PIPA because the bill will do next to nothing to infringe piracy but has the potential to have way, way too much negative consequences. Little upside, big downside. Congress does not understand the Internet.

iPhone Mute Switch

I agree with John - the mute switch is fine the way it is. Only alarms can trigger audible cues (as they should), and everything else is silenced. If you want a silent phone, turn it off.
