Apple Update at the Y

Seen at the YMCA earlier today on one of the large flat-panel displays they've got running: At least half the time I'm there elements of Windows (usually an error message and/or update prompts) occupy the screen. This is the first time Apple's Windows software update has appeared. I didn't even know Apple had a Windows […]

Safari 3.0b3

The latest Safari 3 beta still can't remember the position of the scrollbars when you reload. Absolutely infuriating…

Away Status

I don't mind when people on chat clients mark themselves as away when they're really there. I sometimes do this when I don't really want to be bothered but might still want to initiate a conversation or two. I do mind when people are marked as available and yet aren't actually there at their computer. […]

This song came up twice in a row in Party Shuffle mode. The exact same song (and the same file): Erik is listening to "Everlasting Love" by Howard Jones from the album "Cross That Line" (1989). Erik has rated this song 4.0 stars and last played this song Sunday, June 24, 2007 9:05:42 pm. I […]

My iTunes Plus Upgrade

81 songs with three complete albums: $18.30. Update: Why the hell didn't iTunes maintain my ratings and play counts for the new versions? I now have 81 unrated, unplayed songs that - in my opinion - shouldn't be unrated or unplayed.

Mac/PC Spoofs

Laurie McGuinness spoofs the Mac/PC ads. I'm always up for a good parody, but these are rather bad. Most of the ads seemingly exist just to poke fun at stereotypes. In "Money," Mac is paid a dollar for graphic design work. In reality, graphic designers make a good bit of money and, last I heard, […]

Forlorned Vista Wallpapers

My friend Heinrich has posted information on the forgotten Vista wallpapers. Some are quite nice - the package is well worth a download.

/bin/rm /bin/rm

Yeah, uh, this is not a very wise cron task: /bin/rm /bin/rm /files/I/actually/wanted/to/delete Stupid copy/paste. Needless to say, I now have a /bin/rm_backup file as well. 🙂

Recording a Phone Call

I have an interview scheduled with someone later this week, and I will have to record a phone call. Prior to today, I thought I might just use Skype. At 2.1 cents/minute, it's not exactly expensive. Still, I have some questions and concerns. Can a third person (on the Skype application) be conferenced in to […]

Hopefully this will be handled easily. I have a few EMI tracks, but I'd like to be offered the chance to seamlessly "upgrade" to the higher-quality, DRM-free versions. Consumers who have already purchased standard tracks or albums with DRM will be able to upgrade their digital music for $0.30 per track. All EMI music videos […]

A while back I signed my name on a postcard with a black sharpie. I scanned it, desaturated it, and adjusted the levels in Photoshop to white out the background and make the darkest black true black. All is well. Now, I'd like to use the signature as a semi-transparent watermark on some of my […]

Shutdown Day

I did it. I didn't use my computer for an entire day, on Shutdown Day 2K7. I'm writing this post on March 17 at 6:03pm, but I'm going to date it 11:59:59pm on March 24, 2007.

LogoMaid - a design chop shop - has ripped off Dan Cederholm's SimpleBits logo, then gone so far as to threaten a lawsuit against Dan claiming he stole the logo. Yeah, right. John Gruber has more on this, and I'm posting merely to add my PageRank weight to the side that roots squarely against outfits […]

@aol.com

Real businesspeople do not use @aol.com email addresses. I'm sorry, they just don't.

MediaTemple Performance

I'm absolutely livid with MediaTemple currently. LIVID. For the past two weeks, my server - which hosts a vBulletin forum, two popular blogs (with caching enabled), and a few other little piddly sites that are lucky to get 1000 hits per day. I'm hosting with the $50 (dv)Base plan, and despite a month and a […]
