A friend of mine has 220 GB of data (music) on a 250 GB disk. He'd like to defragment the disk but isn't sure what options are available and doesn't have the space to do a "drag, erase, copy back" defragmentation. I also seem to recall Mac OS X 10.4 automatically defragmenting files under 20 […]

I'm just linking to this so I can remember how to uninstall it all when I'm done goofing around with Front Row on my G5 tower.

I've never mentioned it here, but my iPod Shuffle has an engraving on it. When it's free, why not?

A pal of mine has set up a site for former or ex-Apple employees (it depends on how you look at it) at afterapple.com. I have yet to sign up as all of my Apple associates are either friends that still work for Apple, former co-workers I don't care to talk to, or former co-workers […]

Dammit. You'd think I'd learn. Saft and Security Updates don't go well together. Duh!!! Here's to hoping this SAFT update doesn't quite take 12 hours as the last one did. Here's also to hoping that I have a tiny bit more patience when the next security update is released.

From Apple: The installer increases the default values for the size of the TCP send and receive buffers. With larger buffers more data can be in transit at once. A startup configuration file is also updated so that these changes will persist across restarts. I haven't checked speeds before and after, but I'm surprised the […]

The only one of the ten I found useful was the one to turn off PDF viewing: defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool YES FWIW, I already use SAFT and consider it a lifesaver for one purpose: saving tabs when Safari crashes.

In BBEdit, you can find and replace tabs and carriage returns quite easily. Hell if I could figure out how to do that in TextMate today. \t and \r certainly didn't work, and copying and pasting tabs and carriage returns into a single line NSTextField is not my idea of a good time. I keep […]

I've set mine to 1 millisecond, thanks to Mr. Knight: defaults write -g NSDragAndDropTextDelay -int 1 or sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist NSDragAndDropTextDelay -int 1

Unsanity has released Chat Transcript Manager, a project I believe Slava was working on (and off, and on, and off) for the past few years. I remember trying a chat log viewer at least 16 months ago… Anyway, it's great if you use iChat. I'm not particularly thrilled with what it adds to Adium X […]

When I last wrote about TextMate, I commented on its lack of preferences and, essentially, shelved the idea of using TextMate because of it. Today I grabbed the latest beta and gave it a whirl. I was perhaps 30 minutes away from buying it when I decided to try one more thing: my AppleScript for […]

I'm not an audio technician. I can get around an audio application, I know what waveforms represent, and so forth, but when it comes to editing audio my skills are limited. I've begun using Soundtrack pro to produce my weekly podcast and I have a few questions. Perhaps some people out there can answer them […]

Thanks to Aaron Linville, I've compiled bing for Mac OS X: Grab the source: http://fgouget.free.fr/bing/bing_src-1.3.5.tar.gz. Edit Makefile. Uncomment lines 24, 25 regarding the COMPAT_INCS includes. Edit bing.c (line 110) , bing_probes.c (line 11), and bing_stats.c (line 13) and change <malloc.h> to <malloc/malloc.h> It'll build with several warning (they appear to be innocuous, but I haven't […]

My first day as a video iPod owner and I've got problems. I've spent about as much time investigating them as I can, and I've solved a few. Here, then, are the unresolved issues: Problem One: Why Not? For whatever reason, a few of the photos I have in iPhoto (JPEGs) won't synchronize to the […]

At The Sand Trap, we're looking to start a new column. Someone will send us their video, we'll critique their swing, and post our thoughts to the site. It'll be similar to the help given on this site (which I set up for my high school golf team). Like the second link above, I'd like […]
