Design Changes

The site's going to be a mess for a day or two. The main page is mostly done (much tweaking to be done), but the individual archives and whatnot are going to be unstyled (or, rather, improperly styled).

I tried to get away from having a sidebar, but you simply can't read content that's 800 pixels wide. It looks awkward. I moved the buttons to the top so that they can be a primary focus. I haven't validated yet. I don't know whether I like the color of the categories, and so on.

Leave your comments, but realize that the design you're seeing may not be the design I've written about here (or the one someone else commented on) as it will change over time.

Carey and I are going out for the evening, though, so I'm done designing for today.

QotD: Stacks and Queues

Question: From Jeremy comes this: is your email a stack or a queue? In other words, do you have new messages at the top or the bottom?

My Answer: My newest messages are at the top. If something requires a reply, I hit reply and save as a draft (or write the reply and send it right away). Or, occasionally, mark it as unread and come back to it a few hours later. I keep messages until they're not needed anymore, then I delete or archive them.

Utopia Font

I'm considering using "Utopia" in my new blog's design, but am not sure where the font comes from. Any ideas? It appears to be an Adobe font. I'll research it more after I work on the design more here in Photoshop, but I thought someone might have the answer before I get around to it.

Politics are Over

I'm sick enough of politics at this point that there simply won't be any more political posts on my blog for quite awhile. Questions asked of me about my vote (against Kerry) will be ignored and possibly deleted given their lame-duck status post-this-post.

I've talked with a few people older than me this week who said they simply miss the days when candidates would run on their record, their personality, and their policies (or ideas). It's all about negativity these days, and whether that negativity is founded or not seems to be unimportant.

69.a.licious

Sometimes I revert to "college guy" mentality. 🙂

Porn.A.Licious

I still have no idea why I'd want to use del.icio.us. Shared bookmarks? Uhm, okay. I already have bookmarks in Safari, and they're synced with .Mac. Why would anyone else care what I'm bookmarking? No idea.

Getting the Web

It occurred to me today that there are some people that still don't quite "get" the Web. They don't understand that people use the Web for information. They don't understand that people feel more confident making a choice about something if they can type in "productname.com" or something and see pictures before they go.

Today, I'm speaking of golf courses in the Erie area. Very, very, very few have Websites: sites that would let me, on my own time, check greens fees, yardages (scorecards), get a map and driving directions, and so forth.

Da(m)n

Some people seem to have a keen sense of reality. Some do not. First the Sherlock thing and then "Clinton pursued Osama bin Laden?" And 20+ other fallacious, silly things? Y'know, cuz Colin Powell never served his country or anything…

Almost all of the questions Dan's asked have been answered and the implications rebuked so many times by now that the work has been done for me. I simply point you there for fun: the Kerryites will get a kick out of it (though, were I one, I imagine I'd simply be embarrassed) and the Bushites will get riled up.

Seems Dan's been watching - and believing - far too much Michael Moore. Heck, Michael Moore - almost as much as anything - has cemented my vote for the Republicans this time around.

P.S. I'm going to be pretty diligent about deleting any comments that are rude to other commenters. Pick on me all ya want - I can take it. Do so with some civility, and with the understanding that I might disagree with you as much as you disagree with me.

Bag-Boy

I wanted to look at the site for Bag Boy golf carts today, and believing the URL to be bag-boy.com I typed it in.

Safari promptly displayed "Mac OS X Server: Welcome to your website" and the other usual placeholder text.

I picked up two Express-GX push carts yesterday in silver/black: one for me, one for Carey on her birthday. She also got Precept MC Ladies (buy one get one free, $19.99/doz) and lessons (four one hour group lessons). And her golf clubs from months ago. And a sock monkey. And a sweater. And a whole lot of love. 🙂

Samba de Amigo

Every time I hear "The Cup Of Life" by Ricky Martin I think of Samba de Amigo. Every time. Best drunk college party game ever.

QotD: Childhood Toy

Question: What one childhood toy did you want most but never receive?

My Answer: Carey, seemingly, wanted a sock monkey and nested dolls. I got her the first yesterday for her birthday, so she's semi-satisfied. 🙂 Personally, I always wanted one of those little cars. I now know I wouldn't have been satisfied, though. The thing would have had to go much faster for me to have wanted to use it for more than a few days.

QotD: iPod Photo

Question: Why the fuck would you use iTunes to synchronize photos to an iPod? And do you want one of the new iPod Photos?

My Answer: My answers: "Hell if I know" and "I'd rather buy a year-old iBook for six-hundred-freaking-dollars."

Halloween iPod

Introducing: the Halloween iPod.

Ipod Halloween

And other rejected Limited Edition iPods. And the Ashlee Simpson iPod.

iTunes 4.7

Thoughts, in no random order.

  • Synching photos in iTunes is stupid. That's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it.
  • "Find Duplicates" is dumb dumb dumb. It matches song names and that's it. Who cares if they're different lengths, genres, albums, artists, and ratings. Who cares?!?!
  • "Keep Mini Player on top of all other windows" is great, but then again I use Synergy.
  • Putting an "iPod" item in the preferences is nice.
  • The ability to turn off Party Shuffle and Radio is both nice and again something I won't use.
  • I need to figure out how to do those "Artist Alerts" things.*
  • Unrelated, but worth saying: $29 for a fucking sock for your iPod? Ha!

* Figured it out. Turns out Artist Alerts are easy: go to an artist's page in the iTMS and look for "Artist Alert" in the top right area. Click it. Done.

Then you're offered the choice to get an Artist Alert for all artists in your purchase history. I'd turn this on (just to see how it went) if I was sure I could turn it off at some point. It's easy to turn this on and off. Just "Manage Artist Alerts" somewhere in the iTMS.

Delicious… Error Message

Tried to sign up to be notified when "Delicious Library" would be available. Instead got:

Error in query: INSERT INTO librarynotificationlist(emailaddress) VALUES('email_here'). Got error 122 from table handler
Warning: Unknown(): write failed: Disk quota exceeded (122) in Unknown on line 0

Warning: Unknown(): Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct (/tmp) in Unknown on line 0

Great. Gives me so much confidence that the product will be worth $40!

Spam Slammed

I'm getting comment spammed quite a bit today. About 100 so far: far fewer than other "bursts," but these are coming from all over. What's worse: MT-Blacklist is having a hard time actually keeping up with it. I lowered my URL limit to 2 (meaning 3 or more is moderated), yet this doesn't stop the same URL from being posted four hundred times in one comment. No, MT-B doesn't catch that…
