Blogs for Research

Sven-S. Porst asks whether blogs are good for research and lists a few pros and cons. I used a "blog" for research quite a bit in college, except I spelled it without the "b." In other words, I had a notebook with dated entries where I wrote down paradigms, mnemonic devices, and other tricks and "eurekas!" as I discovered or invented them.

Had MovableType 2.x been available at that time, I think I might have used it. After all, I type much faster than I write.

Random Quotes

Some guy named Gabe Anderson asked me how I do the random quotes you see to the left. Quite simple, really!

<?
    $lines = file('http://nslog.com/quotes.txt');
    $count = count($lines);
    $linenumber = rand()%$count;
    echo $lines[$linenumber];
?>

May not be the most efficient means of doing this, but it certainly works.

Blockquotes and Q

I'm just testing some things out - apologies to those that will see this in their news aggies several time as I play around. As you'll notice two of these - the two that look like I want them to look - are not valid XHTML 1.1. Anyone know how to fix them so that they are?

A few years ago - nearly two as I write this - I signed up with a company called "HostPro" for what was then called a "Freedom" account. The Freedom account provided 500 MB disk space, root access, 40 virtual hosts, and more on a FreeBSD "box" that I could essentially consider a dedicated - though small - server.

I think I've figured it out… See comments.

Cheap Dog Toys @ Goodwill

Did you know that you can get a big big bag full of stuffed animals for $2.50 at your local Goodwill store? These make great toys for dogs, who chew them up anyway. Stop paying $10 per toy at Petsmart! Getsmart and shop for your doggie toys at Goodwill!

Flint likes his new pink stuffed animal. This is one of the ones I had to throw out quickly, though, because it had foam beads and not stuffing inside of it. I bought two bags today, and then sorted them into "stuffed toys only" and "toys with things like batteries in them." I got about one full bag of each, and donated the bag with the non-suitable toys back immediately. $5 for about 10 new stuffed animals? Bargain city!

OneWord: Dawn

The dawn of a new day, the dawn of a new relationship, the dawn of a new job and a new life? We'll see. Red at night, sailor's delight, red in the morning, sailors take warning. I guess that didn't have the word dawn in it at all, hmm. I know two people named Dawn. Not very fond of that name for women, not something I want to name my kids. Sunsets here in Florida pale in comparison to Erie's, as sad as that seems, but the dawn is pretty nice with the ocean and my pond.

This 60-second entry was brought to you by today's word from OneWord™.

QotD: O.J. Verdict

Question: If you could have decided the outcome of the O.J. Simpson trial, what would your verdict be?

My Answer: A whole lotta jail time for Orenthal. Easily. DNA evidence? The state blew that case so hard it's preposterous.

You are encouraged to answer the Question of the Day for yourself in the comments or on your blog.

My iFly was Down

7:00 - I wake up
7:30 - I finish breakfast
8:00 - I finish a shower
8:30 - I take Flint out again and drive to the Apple store for the iMovie class
10:00 - I begin the iMovie class
11:00 - I break for five minutes
11:30 - I notice that my fly is down :-O
11:31 - I return from excusing myself quickly and fixing the fly
11:32 - I wonder why nobody said anything

Software Engineers

Kasia is wondering what to call software developers. She puts forth three main titles: programmer, software engineer, and hacker. Frankly, I'm not wild about any of the three.

Possibilities Again

The first two times I wrote about the girl I'm seeing1 were here and here. Upon re-reading those entries, it seems as though my subconscious was sneaking out to express some desire to indeed forge more than a friendship with this gal, though in such a way that my conscious mind would let it pass as "I think we have the chance to be great friends."

BackLight

backlight.gifBrad, 95% author of BackLight:

I'm liking all these windows users feeling left out and pining for BackLight.

Darn right, man. BackLight was mentioned again on Call for Help today (I've set my TiVo to record tomorrow morning's repeat) when a Windows user called in to ask Leo if they could do what BackLight does. Leo's answer, summarized? "Not really."

Smilies

Just wanted to list all the smileys I have available to me.

O:-) >:-o 😐 😀 :-O 🙁 B-) 🙂 😛 😉 :-zzz

I called this post "Smilies" because normally I use the word "smiley" and this should be the only post with "smilie" in it, thus allowing me to find it very quickly with http://nslog.com/smilie.

Creating MT Plugins

Just wanted to save the URL (feel free to visit it in the meantime): Developing MT Plugins. I haven't gotten into it myself, yet, but I'm blogging it in the hopes that I do, and soon. Y'know, when I free up one of those 25 hours I use each day. I wonder if borrowing time shortens your life…

Apple Q2 Nets $14M

apple.gifApple profits to the tune of $14M in its second quarter.

Apple today posted a net profit of US$14 million, or 4 cents per diluted share, for its fiscal 2003 second quarter ended March 29, 2003.

I fully expect their stock to drop 50 cents on the news tomorrow, cuz, y'know, that's how the stock market works when it comes to Apple. Profit is bad because a profitable Apple makes stupid stock analysts look, well, stupid.

Car Protocol

Matt talks about what he calls car protocol. Having just picked up a new car (congratulations) and a new fiancée (congratulations), his take on the situation is an interesting one.
