NetFlix Class Action Settlement Revisions

I just got an email from NetFlix. Seems the settlement in their class action lawsuit has been modified to be a little more user friendly. Basically, former customers got one free month and current customers got an upgraded service plan for one month. What's changed is that, before the revision, customers would automatically be kept (and billed) at the subscribed or increased rates after their free month. That has changed and NetFlix will now deactivate or demote you back to your standard plan.

I didn't bother to sign up before, but I have now. So, at some point in the near future, we'll have four DVDs rented out at once. Whoopty doo. 😉

Nintendo Wiimote

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm pretty excited about the Nintendo Wii. Dumb name, promising concept. Not only does the "remote" (or "Wiimote" as some have taken to calling it) feature mottion sensing in several directions (including tilt, etc.) but it features a rumbler and a speaker. That sounds like fun!

Here are some links to the "Classic Controller," a video showing someone playing tennis with the Wiimote, and some final details on the Wiimote and nunchuck controllers.

Volvo S80

I have a loaner car - a Volvo S80. I'm not much of a car person, but this one seems pretty slick (as it should for about $40k). Or maybe it's just that it's a car and I haven't driven one in awhile…

When I push the gas down hard, acceleration! You don't get that from a 280 HP V6 SUV (or whatever my Touareg and the Aztek are). It's kinda fun and, as a rental, I have no problem mistreating it ever so slightly for my own satisfaction. I won't get a speeding ticket or anything, but the push from 0 to 45 is quite fun. 😉

Alas, I'll return it tomorrow when my center console will be repaired. The latch stopped working. Small, tiny issue, but an annoying one nonetheless. I think the repair guys actually broke it when they fixed the cupholder last week…

Haircuts

Why can't my barber (Mike Greene of "Tom Greene" on 38th Street here in Erie) cut my hair short enough on top? I tell him "one inch" and it's 1½ inches. I want short hair, dangit! It'll grow back if you make a mistake on the short side, but a mistake on the long side leaves my head looking top-heavy. I realize I've got a big forehead, but I've told him: either I'm at home (where I don't care about my hair) or I'm wearing a hat playing golf (and nobody can see my hair). Just cut it shorter! 🙂

I guess I shouldn't really care for only $8.

24 (The TV Show)

Question: Do you watch 24?

My Answer: I've never seen more than a few minutes of an episode. I always missed the first one and I figured I'd be out of the loop.

When will the show end? Will it be worth buying the whole series on DVD? Or should I just rent on NetFlix?

How Do You Like Dem Apples?

Apple (the computer company) today won its lawsuit over Apple (the music company). News is reported here, here, here, and here.

Some comments have it nailed: if Apple Corps would put its catalog in the iTMS, they'd be able to reimburse Apple the $6M in court costs losing the lawsuit has cost them!

Oh Kiddo

Recently, the little one has had a hard time taking naps or going to bed at night. Today, for example, we put her into bed at about 2pm for her nap. After coming downstairs, pooping twice, peeing several times, painting her nails, getting cards off the top of her dresser, and just about doing everything in her power to stay awake, I caught her sneaking out of her room and forcefully put her in bed and said with a strong voice "take a nap, now, we already told you several times!"

It's the same thing at night: she'll go to bed at 8pm and around 11, if we're lucky, she'll finally fall asleep after ten or fewer trips to the bathroom for various things, like a drink of water, peeing, painting her nails, etc.

Kids These Days

Kids these days really don't seem to get a lot of the things that I, a mere 10-12 years ago, got pretty well. Carey sees it (as a teacher), I see it as an assistant golf coach.

They just don't listen. At all. To anything. And then they get pissed when you ask them why they aren't listening.

I improved from a 95 to an 85 to a 75 in my three summers playing golf. I was the 6 man, the 2 or 3 man, and then the 1 man on my team. Three years after learning to play golf, I was winning the junior EDGA stroke play tournament(s) here in Erie. I practiced a helluva lot, but I attribute most of my success to my mental game: I knew how to get around a course in the least number of strokes. I knew how to maximize my scoring opportunities. I spent my winters reading everything I could find. I knew the theory behind just about every kind of shot and I'd practice the ones that I felt could help my game.

Power Outages

Earlier this week when I returned from the airport in Buffalo, the power was out. Today, when Carey and I woke up, the power was out (and it didn't come back on until about 11am).

Can we sue? What the heck? This happens all the time. Last year, the power went out four or five times. These aren't hiccups, either, but six-hour-long power outages.

Unlike most folks, wee have no choice of electric supplier. We can have any electric supplier so long as it's Penelec.

Nice Survey Question

Today I was filling out a survey and the first question asked:

"Do you prefer to use [site name] or Google when trying to find [site topic] information?"

The multiple choice answers available to me were "Yes" and "No."

As a programmer, of course, the answer is Yes unless I don't like to use either (in other words, 1|1 == 1, 1|0 == 1, and 0|1 == 1). Only 0|0 == 0. So I chose yes.

But not many people think like programmers, so I suspect they're going to get some seriously screwed up results for at least that question.

TypeIt4Me 3.0 Public Beta

I have always been a fan of TypeIt4Me, and now the 3.0 version - which becomes a preference pane instead of an input method - is now available.

I last wrote about TypeIt4Me here when I was comparing it to Textpander. Needless to say, now that Ti4M is a pref pane, it beats Textpander hands down.

If you've never given Ti4M a try, now's as good a time as any to do it. I not only use it for things like expanding URLs ("hns" expands to "http://nslog.com/"), my name ("ejb" to "Erik J. Barzeski"), and other actual abbreviations, but I use it to correct common typos like "teh" to "the" and so forth.

QotD: Apple’s New Ads

Question: Which is your favorite of Apple's new ads? Your least favorite?

My Answer: I like "Viruses" the most and "iLife" and "WSJ" the least.

Back from New Joysey

I'm back from four days (and around 125 holes) of golf. I'll be updating this blog with some older back entries (mostly QotDs) later tonight if I get the chance.

QotD: Favorite Airport

Question: What is your favorite airport into which to fly (or out of which to fly)?

My Answer: I don't have one. They all suck. 🙂 But I'm curious what others think. I don't do much air travel…

QotD: Wealth

Question: How important is a person's wealth (or income) in choosing them as a potential partner for a date?

My Answer: Not very. Though the kind of job they have is very indicative of the kind of person they are, I found.
