QotD: Google

Question: How many times per day do you visit Google?

My Answer: About six, nearly none of which involves looking for entries on my own blog. 🙂

Albright Knot

This knot is used to join two lines of different thicknesses. It is used to attach a heavier 'leader' (rather than a double) to a lighter main line. It requires careful forming of the loops.

You can learn more about this knot - or other knots - by searching Google, foo!

Pirate Day

Shiver me timbers, matey! September 19 is Talk Like a Pirate Day. I guess I'll have to brush up on my vocabulary and find me some buxsom beauties with which to share some booty. Or something like that… Arrrrr!

Pittsburgh 20, Kansas City 41

Well, I can easily say that I'm glad they had this game early in the season. After last week's "not as close as the score tells it" 34-15 victory over Baltimore, the Steelers bumbled their way to a disappointing 41-20 loss today.

Maddox was again quite good (more on this later), throwing near 60% (28 of 47) for 336 yards. Burress had seven catches for 115 yards and Ward nine for 146. The defense played ho hum, giving up 122 on the ground (31 on a single run) and only 125 in the air. Then again, who needs an air game when you score via interception return, kickoff return, and three runs. The Steelers, contrarily, managed only 60 yards on the ground.

QotD: Friends

Question: Did you ever really watch Friends?

My Answer: Yep. When I was in high school, I thought Jennifer Aniston was quite attractive. Then I went to school and simply grew out of it. Nowadays I haven't even got a clue who's pregnant, who's had a kid, who's married (or divorced), or what. I just know that Jennifer Aniston still looks pretty good and that the cast is paid a lot of money. 🙂

QotD: Britney

Question: On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate Britney Spears' talent?

My Answer: Six, maybe seven. She's got more talent than most people, giving her a minimum of a five or so, but not nearly as much as true "artists." A lot of her "talent" is in looking good (and in fact this question is inspired by comments on yesterday's entry). Still, she can sing fairly well, she holds her own as a simple actress, and she dances pretty well. Is she an "artist?" Nah.

Media

rollingstone_britney.jpgbrit.jpg

Britney Spears has stirred up quite a bit of muck lately. First she makes out with Madonna, then she poses like this (see images at right) in Rolling Stone. That's all fine - she's pretty hot, and I enjoy looking. Will I buy Rolling Stone? No. Will I gawk at her half-naked on the Web? Sure! I'm a male, after all. Will I secretly make judgments about her level of intellect? Nah. I'd rather make judgments about my own intellect.

Beating a Cub

People like this deserve the same treatment they've given to their victims - in this case a black bear - every day for the rest of their lives:

"I was never mean to the bear. There was a couple of times I wanted to hit him over the head with a pipe or something but I didn't do that," Mr. Ryan said.

What the fuck? Is that person mentally retarded? Or just a major asshat? And only a $2000 fine!?!? What?!?! Thanks to OGL for the link.

QotD: Quitting

Question: Have you ever quit a job by simply not showing up the next work day?

My Answer: Yes, I have. Then, two days later, I called and asked them if they were handling my two-week vacation properly in payroll. 🙂

John Ritter, Johnny Cash

Both John Ritter and Johnny Cash have shuffled off this mortal coil. Not a good day for people named John, nor for their fans. I can't say I'm a big fan of either, but I know that they brought a great amount of amusement and happiness to many, and for that, they will be missed.

Rods and Reels

I was writing an email to Captain Jimbo, and I thought this information may come in handy in the future as well, so I'm documenting it here. My current rod and reel situation:

Redbone 2-piece M/L with a Daiwa Capricorn 2500 and 10 lb. line
Redbone 1-piece M/L with a Shimano Stradic 4000 and 10 lb. line
Redbone 1-piece M/H with a Shimano Stradic 6000 and no line *

* still trying to decide whether to string this up with 15lb test or what. Both of the 10 lb. line above is bright bright green, which doesn't matter in saltwater much because you use a leader. It didn't seem to matter in freshwater the other day either, because I caught three fish.

I've also got two Mitchell fiberglass M/L rods and two Mitchell 300 reels (all four of which are about 20-30 years old). One of the rods needs some eyelet/tip work, and I forgot to take it when I went up to Sports World two days ago. Perhaps tomorrow I'll take it up before work.

SpamSieve 2.0

spamsieve-icon.pngSpamSieve 2.0 is out, and it's got a loooooooooong list of changes. I won't go over them here - you can click the link for yourself. What I will say is "free?" This update is free to registered users of 1.x. Were I Michael Tsai, I'd have had a hard time deciding whether or not to make this a $10 upgrade or to release it free. On one hand, $25 is an expensive add-on for something Mail does "for free" (though not nearly as powerfully). On the other hand, 2.0 adds so many features that I would have - and I suspect many others would have as well - gladly paid for an upgrade. Perhaps Michael will share his reasoning here or on his blog.

Of course, one thing this update does not do - and cannot do - is fix Entourage's inability to run rules on an email upon which an AppleScript has already acted. This means that I've got to pre-filter* all of my email, and only unfiltered email gets hit by SpamSieve. There's really no elegant way around this.

* Sales notifications from FSS sales go to a certain folder, some mailing lists get filed away, all comments from this blog are put in a certain folder and marked as read, etc.

QotD: Alert

Question: For the Mac users out there, what is your alert sound?

My Answer: Mine is currently "Tink" and has been for over a year. Perhaps I'll change it today, but "Tink" has always been a favorite. It's short and therefore not very annoying.

About a Boy

I watched About a Boy today. What rubbish! It was funny early on, when Will talked about visiting FART or whatever organization that was just to shag the single "mums," but then it took a decidedly crappy turn and ended up as some lame feel-good (or feel-asleep-out-of-boredom) movie with lots of ugly people (save, of course, for Rachel Weisz, who had a small role). Ugh. Who liked this movie? Oh, I know who now - someone who likes every movie. Lot of good that kind of outlook gets you. Or, more specifically, gets your friends.
