Bad grammar and spelling on the Internet.
I've called it a pet peeve. I've called it an occupational hazard. I can't and likely never will really "get over" it, but I do know that pointing out bad grammar and/or spelling to the author almost never results in a positive outcome.
That said, I like the way one commenter put it here:
I liken it to brushing your hair or checking your suit for lint before an interview; people will notice errors, and, for some of them, it's a deal-breaker. They'll stop reading, outright, or they'll view everything else you wrote with increased scepticism.
In some cases, too, the errors are such that they get in the way of the message—it's not unlike trying to view the world through a lens covered with specks of dust. Clean them, and your point is easier to discern.

Apparently, nowadays they just give these things out. I plan to apply next year.
What exactly had Obama done by February 1 to warrant nomination?
And cut the leftist hippie bull, John. Do you honestly believe that nobody else out there deserved it more on February 1, when nominations were due? Or even now? What exactly has Obama done to bring about peace?

Adium 1.4b9 was released on August 21 of this year. Since then, no updates of any kind have been released.
I use Adium because it works reasonably well, looks the way I like, and I chat with people on various networks (AIM, MSN, Yahoo, GTalk, etc.) regularly.
In later versions, however, I tend to wake up or return to the computer to find bizarre, ugly situations where contacts from different groups have been merged. It's annoying to say the least - I have to spend the next ten minutes resetting my contact list - and deleting a few of the problematic contacts doesn't seem to help much. After running Adium for awhile, clicking the useless "Choose Address Book Card…" brings up an AB Picker that shows about eight of each group, and searching for "Bob" shows results for "Emily" and "Steve." It's FUBAR.
I have no doubt that Adium development will pick up soon again, and hopefully they can resolve the contact list issues.

Smoking is already illegal in a lot of public places - even privately owned buildings like bars and things - in a lot of cities and states. The argument being that your right to wave your arms about ends at my nose.
To be honest I think laws like this are fine, but I've intentionally left options like this out of the poll. Yes or no: should smoking be illegal. If you feel the need to explain your choice more, please do so in the comments.

And not that you can legislate intelligence, but who in the heck smokes or chews anymore? How big of an idiot do you have to be to do that sort of stuff? It's not like people can use "we don't know how bad it is for you" as an excuse anymore.

Can those of you with copies of Cyndicate try this please and report back?
These are the commands you'll enter in the Terminal (with Cyndicate not running). If you're uncomfortable in the Terminal, skip this post entirely.
First, note the size of your "Cyndicate.cyndata" file.
% cd Library/Application\ Support/Cyndicate/Cyndicate.cyndata/
% sqlite3 dataStore.sql
SQLite version 3.6.12
Enter ".help" for instructions
Enter SQL statements terminated with a ";"
sqlite> select count(*) from ZENCLOSURE where zarticle isnull;
We're interested in the number you get here. I got 222 and that was after only a short time using the database.
sqlite> delete from ZENCLOSURE where zarticle isnull;
sqlite> vacuum;
sqlite> .quit
If you'd like to help, please report your total and your before/after sizes in the comments below. Thanks.

It's tough to imagine what in the world Sony was thinking with the PSP Go. This Ars Technica review sums it up pretty well.
In the middle of a recession, Sony has released the most expensive portable system on the market, and as an added bonus the company seemed to go out of its way to give the finger to existing customers. You can't even trade in your older system for the newer one to help with the price, because then you can't play your games.
As that dog on Conan would say: "The PSP Go is a great system… for me to poop on!"
We have two DSes in our house (which are almost never used), so I'm hardly the expert in handheld gaming (I don't even use my iPhone for many games other than Wurdle). This certainly won't change that…

I love my Harmon Kardon Soundsticks. The last time I wrote about them was in this post when I re-did my office (painted, curtains). The image from that post is:

The 2009-10 hockey season kicks off tomorrow. The Penguins will raise their Stanley Cup banner and spend a few more minutes thinking about what they accomplished last year.
How lame would it feel to be a new member of the team, watching the banner get raised? How lame is it that a few of the teammates that helped to win the Cup won't be there because they joined other teams in the off-season?

Rivet uses a free library named jhead to read EXIF information from JPEG files. In its pre-built state, it's a PowerPC-only library, and I was recently reminded of this when I viewed a few hundred pictures on my Xbox 360 and then returned to my Mac to see a few hundred instances of Software Update asking to install Rosetta. D'oh! 🙂
We're working on solving the issue and expect to have an update out that fixes this issue shortly.

Last-minute defeats against the Bears and now the Bengals after barely sneaking out a victory in the first week? It seems Mike Tomlin's cushy soft camp this year isn't serving him well.
I really like Mike Tomlin, but dude needs to get his head in the game. Bruce Arians should have been fired several seasons ago and Dick Lebeau has now allowed opponents all sorts of game-winning or go-ahead drives late in the games. His defense hasn't produced turnovers this year nor has it gotten many sacks. Tomlin is allowing people like Farrior and Woodley to continue to play when they're doing absolutely nothing to help, and I can't count the number of times I've seen an empty backfield and a shotgun formation on 3rd-and-2 this year already.
It's disgusting.
Here's to hoping Mike Tomlin removes his head from his rear, stops tossing platitudes and clichés at the media and his players, and makes the necessary changes.

For a little over a year now it's gone to my Phone Favorites, but I'm trying out the "Camera" setting for awhile since every time I want to use the camera it feels like the moment has passed by the time I finally get it launched.

I ran into a situation today that kind of ticks me off. A friend and I are playing in a two-man golf tournament. After one guy stands on the line of his partner's putt (in violation of rule 14-2), I point out that it's not cool and someone might call him on it if he keeps doing it.
After they do it - in the scramble portion of the round - to hole a birdie putt the first player missed on the 11th hole, I again mention it to them, this time mentioning it to the other player.
Over the remaining seven holes, they break the rule about eight more times - not counting the several times they break the rule on the tee box and in the fairway. 😛
And what could I say about it? Nada. The pro would likely say something like "it's just a scramble, who cares?" Which, frankly, misses the point.
My friend said to me "Well, I'll never play in this type of thing again." I agree.
