I can get video off of my DirecTV-equipped TiVo ("DirecTiVo"), but it's a painful process that includes hooking my DV camera (a little Sony) up and recording. I think take the DV Cam upstairs to my G5, where I import the video. Obviously, for an hour-long program, this process takes over two hours.
I'm not sure whether there are any devices out there that can digitize (to DV files, or any other editable format) quickly from TiVo playback. I'm not interested in recording live TV, but rather simply played-back TV after the fact.
The DirecTiVo is nice, but I can't even use the USB ports to remotely access the TiVo. Any ideas?

Question: Google + Apple = ?
My Answer: Something that can easily defeat Microsoft? Nah - it's probably nothing. What do you think?

I've been playing with Musicast for the past few months, and though the 1.0 lacks a few features, it really provides a nifty interface to let you share your music with others.
Is the RIAA watching? I don't know. But at the same time, I've password-protected my Musicast site from time to time so that only I can see my music from someone else's computer.
And, in talking with the developer Andy, version 1.1 will really rock. Grab it now for $18 or so.

Question: Which sock do you put on first? What pants leg?
My Answer: The left one, usually. I'm not sure one. I do, like most people, put them on one leg (or foot) at a time.

I'm considering a Mac Pro purchase to replace my Dual 2 GHz G5 (2x250 GB, 2.5, BT, AP, SD). I have an existing 23" Aluminum display that I'll likely carry over. With $899 for 4 GB of RAM from RAMJet, the price comes to about $4500 after tax for this configuration:
Two 3GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Stock: 1GB (2 x 512MB)
500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB (2 x dual-link DVI)
Two 16x SuperDrives
Both Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and AirPort Extreme
Stock: Apple Keyboard and Mighty Mouse - U.S. English
4 GB RAM from RAMJet

Ha. Don Yacktman cares so little about Freshly Squeezed Software that he hasn't yet noticed that "freshsqueeze.com" - the base href
on the FSS site, expired on August 24 (two days ago) and now resolves to Dotster's "revenuedirect.com" site. Two of the other domains (freshlysqueezedsw.com and .net) are also "dead" as of August 24.
As such, the other two URLs ("software" spelled out) that display the FSS site are currently very ugly. The CSS and all images are not appearing because the base href
is set to freshsqueeze.com. Ha ha ha ha ha ha.
On the plus side, at least this may finally make people realize what I've known for over a year now - that Don hasn't ever done jack squat with FSS and won't ever.
At least we'll have Iris.

I tried Khoi's "Shorty" software today and came away unimpressed. Not only did the software fail to work for me (I have Apache 2.x and MySQL 4.x installed at The Sand Trap), but I jumped into the forum and read about a few serious security issues. Also, the software doesn't work with IE, ruling out, what, 60% of web users?
Perhaps by the time it hits 1.0 it will actually work. For now, TinyURL will continue to get my business.

Does anyone happen to have a soon-to-be-expired Apple (hardware) developer discount?

By the way… Iris is the name you'll want to look for on this blog.
And in the meantime, remember to check out Scorecard.

Really? Yes. And this quote about says it all:
"Creative is very fortunate to have been granted this early patent," Apple's CEO Steve Jobs said in a press release.

The North East High School boys team had their first match today, albeit at J.C. Martin (ugh). They finished at 290, a couple strokes ahead of Harborcreek, who had 290. With scores of 71, 72, 73, and 74 counting, Cathedral Prep and McDowell beat them.
Harborcreek will likely be the toughest competition all year, and I'd have predicted a fourth-place season (out of eight teams). If they can managed to finish third all year (or total), that will be a job well done.

Question: Has anyone ever been as dominant in any other sport as Tiger Woods is in golf?
My Answer: I don't think so. The guy has a 30% winning percentage in the majors. Phil Mickelson is something like 3 for 58 (~5%). Jack Nicklaus was 18 for 159, or about 11.3% (though that number includes many majors well past 1986, when he won his 18th). 12 majors in 10 years, including three to four years (split over two separate times) when Tiger wasn't very competitive due to swing changes. WOW.

How can we resist?
3,600 square feet, 1.73 acres, 50 parking spaces… and only $8! We'll put in a bid for double that, all cash, with a flexible move-in date. Awesome!

There have been several "hacks" for vBulletin that allowed revenue sharing of ads shown through Google's AdSense program. First there was a hack from AlexanderT, then one from a fellow named "cinq" who has since fallen off the planet, and just today I found one from "webmastershome". There's also a $150 option from Steve Fleming, but I have several professional issues with Mr. Fleming's approach (not the least of which is his apparent lack of knowledge of the several free albeit outdated options available).
I PMed AlexanderT and was told that, when he upgraded to vBulletin 3.6.0 (he's still using 3.1.x), he'd likely update his hack and make it available to all. That still put me in a bind.
vBulletin disallows use of PHP in templates, making this whole thing a total pain. phpinclude_start and phpinclude_end seemed like valid solutions, but I wasn't sure how they'd work, and setting the variables before I even knew who had posted seemed silly.
I came up with a simple JavaScript solution I hope works. It's below.
