QotD: Phones

Question: How many phones do you own and use?

My Answer: My Cingular/Motorola phone, my T-Mobile/Danger phone (don't really use it), and my home phone. That's three and two, respectively. My home phone has a second handset if you want to count that one too.

Cingular = Crappy Phones

Y'know, I like Cingular. I really do. They've got good coverage, decent rates, and sales offices all over. They're not too bad. They're certainly not Verizon, that's for sure!

They suck at one important thing, however: phone choice. I got my Motorola V60 last March or so, and it's still the best phone they offer. Bluetooth? Ha! PDA stuff? Ha ha! They've got the following pathetic offering:

  • Sony-Ericsson T62u (free)
  • Nokia 6340i (free)
  • Motorola C331t ($50)
  • Nokia 3650 ($130)
  • Nokia 8265i ($130)
  • Motorola v60ti ($150)

Grrrrrr.

FWIW, I almost never use my HipTop. I need to find a way to cancel that T-Mobile contract without paying lots of penalties or something.

Study: Masturbation May Lower Risk of Prostate Cancer

I kid you not. Updates to my blog in the next few days will now be non-existent. Gotta do as much preventative medicine as possible. Anyone willing to contribute good porn (for my health, dammit!!!) should send care packages to… 😀

NeXT Hardware

I'm looking to buy a NeXT Cube or Slab. I'd like it to run OpenStep 4.2 and be in good (working) condition. I'll pay for it, obviously, and I'm putting a note here on my blog because searches on eBay for "next slab" really don't turn up very many appropriate results! 🙂 Plus, I know at least a few people out there who should have some… anyone willing to help a nostalgic geek out?

FTPeel PB 3 Out

ftpeelicon.gifFTPeel Public Beta 3 can be downloaded by clicking the picture. This one's got a lot of improvements and bug fixes, some of which I'll list here.

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed a crash that sometimes occurred after closing a document when some other activity was occurring (like a download was going or a directory was being loaded).
  • The upload "percentage done" string is now displayed correctly.
  • FTPeel no longer mirrors .DS_Store files.
  • Fixed a crash that sometimes occurred when trying to change directories with the "go to directory..." menu command while in column view.
  • FTPeel should now do a better job of remembering the window frame location and size after the application was quit with windows open, and then re-launched.
  • In list view, if sorting is activated, then the directory list will remain sorted after loading a new directory or transferring over new files, etc.
  • In column view, it's now possible to delete directories.
  • In column view, it's now possible to drag-and-drop upload files into the first column to the left.
  • Fixed a crash that occurred when the GetURL or OpenURL AppleScript commands were called, and the user began a transfer and then closed the FTP window.

QotD: Hairless

Question: Would you rather a girl be completely hairless or not shave at all?

My Answer: Not shaving at all means you've got three bushes where you normally don't want 'em: two under the armpits and one in the legpit (for lack of an, uhhh, appropriate term). Shaving completely means hair and eyebrows too - a tough look to pull off for any woman. Frankly, I'll go with the latter. Armpit hair on a gal is higher up on my list of "gross things" than a bald woman, and I know I don't like hair stuck between my teeth…

Keira Knightley… Or Not

I hate spam. Sometimes, however, it makes me chuckle:

From: Keira Knightly <cids@naughtyselling.com>
To: me@myaddress.com
Subject: ADV: Pirates of the Caribbean Stars Naked! - Must be 18 Years or Older

Uhhh, right. Oh well. If the real Keira ever wants to email me, she should feel free. 😉

WebMail.app

Mail (the app) on Mac OS X uses standard mbox files to store its messages. Given this, how hard would it be to write a webmail client that literally served up your local mboxes. When I'm at a friend's house, how great would it be to log into my machine with a simple browser and see my current email. Mail will have already filtered them into the proper folder(s), marked some as spam, and done all the "checking" of my eight accounts for me (every five or ten minutes, in fact).

Mac OS X has Apache and the ability to run perl, python, php, and scads of other things. The idea here is pretty simple: use Mail to do what it's always done - to fetch your messages, filter them, etc. Then use its documents - standard mbox files - to serve up a multiple-account webmail system. Replies could go into the Outbox mbox for sending by… Mail itself once again! The really ambitious developer could probably add in other Mail "hooks" such as the ability to specify a signature for replies, the ability to "mark as junk," and other things. Mail is also fairly AppleScriptable, no?

Or maybe it has already been done?

QotD: Screensavers

Question: What's your favorite current and all-time screensaver?

My Answer: My favorite current one varies. I change my screensaver about once a week. Sometimes it's the Matrix one. Sometimes it's Flurry (not the bundled one, the better one with more streams). Sometimes it's seasonal (with snowflakes). My favorite screensaver of all time? It's gotta be the Marine Aquarium one. Of course, that costs $20, and apparently costs $30 if you want the new version with the clock… You get what you pay for: it's gorgeous.

20th Century Voyage

To quote codepoet:

20th Century Voyage is by far the best screen saver I've seen written for Mac OS X. Against a beautiful background of two translucent Earths spinning counter to each other, all the major events of the 20th century are displayed (war, music, movies, politics, inventions, etc.) with random quotations from various history-makers.

It's great. I'll be showing it off to people later today. And hey, that's a good question for a QotD…

You Don’t Know Who You’re Talking To

I think it's funny when people don't know with whom they're discussing a topic. For instance, someone talking about the creator's intent when creating the Objective-C language contradicts something Brad Cox says on a newsgroup in the same discussion. That'd be a bad thing to do, because, well, Brad Cox is the creator of Objective-C.

QotD: Lover’s Past

Question: If you could find out something about your lover's sex life before you knew them, what would you ask?

My Answer: I'd ask if her perception of romance has been fulfilled by the men in her past (sexually). If not, then I'd know to tread with caution, because an ounce of the Erik is far too potent for those unequipped to handle the, bah, ok, that's just me talking out of my ass. The real answer would be, uhhh, I don't care. I don't really care if someone's slept with 0 or 1-0-0 people. I don't care if they were hogtied to a fence and branded with a cattle poker. I care a lot about the person I'm with, who she may be with me, and where things between us will go. That, and that she's not got any diseases, of course. 🙂

QotD: Sex You Up

Question: If you had to choose the best music to make love to, what would you pick?

My Answer: Enya. Key words here being "make love" and not "fuck" or "have sex." The song "Wonderland" (the line "your body is a wonderland") makes a lot of sense to me, and I've never "made love" in less than two hours (i.e. the same Enya album repeated twice). I once made love to a French Celine Dion album, but frankly, it's just soft sounds at that point. Sensual noises, as it were. Enya's good at those kinds of noises.

BackLight on TechTV… Again

James Duncan Davidson didn't get a chance to mention BackLight on TechTV's "The Screensavers," but it's on their site anyway. Of course, we're grateful to JDD for giving us a little mention. I could point out, too, that this is not the first time BackLight has been mentioned on TechTV. In fact, it's at least the third!
