AppleScript Web Scraping Brain Teaser

Here's something I'd like to do. It begins like this:

set rawSource to ""
tell application "Safari"
set rawSource to source of front document
end tell

Now, at this point, I'd like to run a grep search on the source and grab every string of the form http:// ... &view=new. Then, I'd like to tell Safari to open all of the URLs it finds.

Can't quite figure out how to do that, though. I'd like to avoid round-tripping through BBEdit, if possible.

QotD: Spiritual

Question: Is your Mac a spiritual machine?

My Answer: No. Just something that works the way I imagine a computer should work.

Ancient Browser Sniffing

Check this out. Hit up http://www.pgatour.com/tourcast/ and get to the page pictured below (they're running a free trial currently). Look at the mess of JavaScript. This is the PGA Tour's "TourCast" system - a Flash-based "thingy" that can show you (almost live) a player's progress as he plays a round of golf on the PGA Tour.

Tourcast

Look at the JavaScript. Look at that absolute mess of JavaScript. It's horrid! It's wretched! It's hideous! TourCast works in one browser on my Mac: Internet Explorer.

Resetting Your Computer

For future use by… whomever.

mount -uw /
cd /private/var/db/netinfo
mv local.nidb local.old
rm ../.AppleSetupDone
exit

That's it!

Mac Mini as Car Stereo

I'd pay up to $1000 right now for a Mac mini with an LCD to replace the factory car stereo in my 2001 Pontiac Aztek. Screw having to use my iPod in the car - I'd have a little copy of iTunes complete with visuals. That'd be sweet!

That'd just be for the stereo! If I could display other information (maybe a text file containing directions, or some phone numbers). If any hardware company is interested in doing this, I'd be interested in writing the software interface for it. Wouldn't be hard - a music player (or use iTunes), a "note taker" and synchronizer, etc. Hmmmmm…

10 Days to PulpFiction 1.2: Day 7

On January 20*, we'll be releasing PulpFiction 1.2. On each of the next ten days, I'll be discussing a new feature we've added to my favorite aggregator. People have asked about our removal of a feature we used to call "Filterize" in PulpFiction 1.1. It was a bad name that indicated that we didn't know how to solve a problem. PulpFiction 1.1 didn't quite solve the problem, but one of 1.2's new features (and another one coming in a later day) attempt to solve.

Today's feature? We've added an "Add to Filter" popup menu to the "QuickSubscribe" sheet. From this QuickSubscribe sheet you can assign your new feed a label, a filter, and a schedule. My filters are set up by label (i.e. if label is "Personal Friends" move article to "Pals" folder), so I don't find myself using "Add to Filter" very much. Our testers love it, though.

There are still seven more days to go. Stay tuned.

* According to plans, anyway. 🙂

P.S. Anyone interested in testing out the current build is encouraged to IM me. It's still a beta, so back up your database.

QotD: VNC

Question: Have you ever used VNC? How has it worked for you?

My Answer: I've used it twice. Once, on a local network, it worked beautifully. That was back in the day of the old grey AirPort base stations - not terribly high bandwidth, but serviceable. Today's experiment in using VNC over two cable- and DSL-connected computers (PC server, Mac viewer) was a disaster.

The Dangers of Auto-Pay

Auto-pay systems are great. I've paid my Cingular bill "automatically" for the past two years or so. I don't have to worry about it - $60 or so ($39.99+$7.99+"taxes") is paid every month without me having to lift a finger.

Today, curious to see how much I talk to Carey, I actually dropped in to check. Since moving back to PA in early October, I've apparently racked up quite a phone bill: $1043.55.

My plan provides 450 minutes nationwide with rollover and free nights and weekends. $39.99 + the $7.99 "MEdia" option that lets me get and send what amounts to unlimited text messages. 450 minutes doesn't cover the amount of time I've spent talking on the phone, though: 7051 minutes in four months. That's 117.52 hours or about 30 hours/month.

QotD: Keyboard

Question: What kind of keyboard do you use for your computer? How do you like it?

My Answer: Ever since Apple went to the plastic USB ones, I've used the cleanest, newest version of those available. When the white ones with edges came out (I think they debuted with an eMac revision), I held off and clung to my black-keyed one, but I've since adjusted.

Carey has my 12" PowerBook, and I liked the keys on that just fine.

10 Days to PulpFiction 1.2: Day 8

On January 20*, we'll be releasing PulpFiction 1.2. On each of the next ten days, I'll be discussing a new feature we've added to my favorite aggregator. Here's one that should have been done earlier, but now it works nicely:

Added exporting of selected subscriptions from the subscription manager.

In other words, you can now selectively export (to OPML) selected subscriptions. If you've got a bunch of feeds labelled "Technology" that you'd like to share with a new co-worker or a friend, type "tech" into the search field, select all of the subscriptions, and export an OPML file. You won't have to worry about handing over your subscription to A New York Escorts Confessions (unless you consider it a "Technology" blog).

Mini is the New Black

Does this mean the mini skirt will be making a come back as well? (If you're offended by, uhhh, butt, then don't read the full entry.)

Celine in America

There's something horribly wrong with this:

Erik is listening to "God Bless America" by Celine Dion from the album "God Bless America" (2001). Erik has rated this song 3.0 stars and last played this song Wednesday, January 22, 2003 11:43:03am.

If only I could figure out what it is…

Not All is Well in Mac-Land

For those who've missed it, Tiger Mail now features the ugliest toolbar buttons ever seen.

UGH!

Plus, that new "semi-metal" window type? I'm going to call it the "tin foil" window. So now we have Aqua windows, brushed metal windows, and tin foil windows.

Double UGH UGH!

QotD: Expensive Keynotes

Question: How much did the MWSF Keynote cost you?

My Answer: About $158. I don't care to pay for Keynote to get Pages, and I don't care to pay for GB to get a newer iPhoto, but so be it. 😛 I don't need the iPod Shuffle, I don't need a Mac mini, and I don't need FCE HD. So… there you have it.

P.S. I did not factor in the fact that AAPL is down $2.81. If that's true, well, the keynote cost me about $1000. 🙂

10 Days to PulpFiction 1.2: Day 9

On January 20*, we'll be releasing PulpFiction 1.2. On each of the next ten days, I'll be discussing a new feature we've added to my favorite aggregator. Here's one of the most requested features:

Added preference to turn off alternating background in article table

Yes, you can now turn off the alternating blue/white background you see in the articles list. Not sure what took us so long, but there you have it. For those of you who want to say "this one sucks more than yesterday," well, I have to ask you this: what Mac news or information besides what happens at MWSF will you be paying much attention to today?

Thought so. There are still eight more days to go. Stay tuned.

* According to plans, anyway. 🙂
