December 2003 Zeitgeist

Every month (since February 2003) I post my site's referral search terms (not what people search for on my site). It's an interesting peek that illustrates "how people are finding me." Here's December's…

QotD: Capital Punishment

Question: Do you believe in capital punishment?

My Answer: I used to, but then I read some statistics: it costs more to kill someone in our government than it does to lock them away for life. I don't mean one of those "life with a chance for parole in two years" either - I mean one of those "twenty-seven life sentences" sentences. So, just let 'em rot in prison. Neither seem to deter crime, but one of them costs me a whole lot less. I choose that one.

Blackened Redfish

I've never said "it tastes like chicken" in seriousness before. Until yesterday, anyway: I had a bite of redfish.

Mom cooked up the redfish according to two recipes: one using a "Cajun Magic" type of seasonings-in-a-shaker; the other using a mix of seasonings and spices. The latter tasted a lot like barbecued chicken, the former like wood-oven-roasted chicken (she didn't use enough spice to give it a real cajun kick).

I was afraid I wouldn't like the taste - I am not a big fan of perch, walleye, and some of the other less "fishy" fish, though I do like trout and steelhead quite a bit. This fish was good. I'll be keeping more redfish in the future. 🙂

Lake Worth Lagoon

Today the old man (yes, I do call him that sometimes) went to Lake Worth Lagoon. The Top Spot map marked a few places as being very, very good for snook (and a few others nearby for jacks and ladyfish). We couldn't launch at our original spot (Lake Park Marina) because it is still under construction, and we couldn't launch at our second spot because it's literally just a marina - no ramps. Instead, we headed down south about two miles and put in there around 8 am.

After paddling through the intercoastal, we beached at a small key. It was nearly low tide (9am) when we arrived. We fished the grass flat (red sea grass, mostly) with spoons and had a few hits but no takers. We saw pelicans diving, but they were diving deep indicating a lack of predators driving the baitfish to the surface.

QotD: Parents

Question: Which of your parents do you like more: the one of the same gender or the one of the opposite?

My Answer: The opposite. Call this a mini-poll - my hunch is that most people will say "opposite."

QotD: TV

Question: If you could program the perfect night of TV, which shows would you choose and in what order?

My Answer: I'd start the evening off with a show that alternated among Joan of Arcadia, Las Vegas, and Fastlane every week. That show would be followed by Ed and West Wing.

Flamingo Fishin’

dad_jack_crevalle.jpgPops and I (and no, I don't call him that) headed down to Flamingo today. I wanted to get in some ocean fishing and the weather was supposed to be spotty, so Flamingo left us several inshore (lakes) choices if the weather was bad upon arrival. It ended up being dead calm, and we paddled out at about 7:30 am.

We hit Joe Kemp Key first where I hooked my redfish the last time. I put on the larger size in a "fire tiger" (a.k.a. greenback or mackerel) pattern and threw it against the mangroves. I remembered that last time I threw it at a 45° angle, and postulated that this might keep the lure in the strike zone longer, and did the same this time. I'd throw it out and reel at varying speeds on the retrieve (but no twitching). After about 20 minutes on the right third of the key (right as you paddle towards it from shore, anyway), I hooked up with something that proceeded to pull me first into the mangroves and then away from them.

QotD: Worship

Question: If you could pick one object to be worshipped by a new religion, what would you choose and why?

My Answer: I'd choose the light bulb. Perhaps that would be a better symbol than an object of worship, but it'll have to do. The light bulb spreads - duh - light everywhere, enabling its followers to "see" the reality of their world. Before light bulbs, only a God could "make" light (ignoring the science here…) and so a light bulb it is.

QotD: Magazine

Question: If you could have only one magazine subscription for the rest of your life, which would you pick?

My Answer: That's easy: Playboy. In addition to the naked chicks, I'd get sports, news, essays and editorials, humor, and more. Maxim is a close second, but they're a little too non-serious to be a real contender.

QotD: Luxury Tax

Question: If you could impose a heavy luxury tax on any item, what would it be and why?

My Answer: Caviar. After all, only wealthy people seem to eat the stuff and who better to tax than those who can afford to give a little more? It's not like I'd want to see a luxury tax on toothpaste or something.

QotD: Party

Question: How would you describe your "kickenest" party in five words or less?

My Answer: Booze, babes, boomboxes, brawls, and bookings. One of my college parties went a bit too far, perhaps…

QotD: Christmas Gift

Question: What's your favorite Christmas (or Hannukah, or Festivus) gift this year?

My Answer: I got a day off. Isn't that good enough? For me, you bet! Samantha got me a Coca Cola gift certificate. She does pay attention!

MovableType 3.0

It doesn't seem that MovableType 3.0 is the same as MovableType Pro, though maybe it is. I don't know. Right now, all I know is that I'm dreading the day 3.0 comes out - I'll probably have to recreate my entire blog. I'll have to make sure MT-Blacklist works or go with the new model. All sorts of decisions will need to be made. It will be hell. Ugh. But yay too.

No Christmas Fish

I had planned to hit the Lake Worth Lagoon today. Turns out the marina - which seems to be behind an apartment complex - is closed today. Peh. I thought Jewish folk don't celebrate Christmas? Or maybe there aren't many Jewish folk in Lake Park, FL. Anyway… I guess it was good to be up at 4am, eh?

On the way to the marina, I drove past the Palm Beach Gardens mall on PGA Boulevard. All this served to do was remind me of a past relationship, and it's probably one about which I'll be thinking for most of the day. It occupied my thoughts the entire way home, and has so far since arriving home as well. Ho hum.

I've got to clean later today, but needless to say, I've got absolutely no ambition to do that.

Useless!

Heaven forbid the damn city of Lake Park give the address to their marina! Jeez! How the heck am I supposed to figure out how to get there (directions) when I've got no idea exactly where it is!

I'm going to fish the grass flats of Lake Worth on Christmas morning. Let's hope Santa has some snook saved up for my stocking (they're out of season - don't confuse my lame holiday sayings to mean I plan to keep any snook).

P.S. Here's an address that I hope is valid. And, of course, I hope that the construction is complete. Launch fees seem to indicate that the place is open.
