John Ritter, Johnny Cash

Both John Ritter and Johnny Cash have shuffled off this mortal coil. Not a good day for people named John, nor for their fans. I can't say I'm a big fan of either, but I know that they brought a great amount of amusement and happiness to many, and for that, they will be missed.

About a Boy

I watched About a Boy today. What rubbish! It was funny early on, when Will talked about visiting FART or whatever organization that was just to shag the single "mums," but then it took a decidedly crappy turn and ended up as some lame feel-good (or feel-asleep-out-of-boredom) movie with lots of ugly people (save, of […]

Baltimore 15, Pittsburgh 34

Given that I'm not home on Sundays, I've got to TiVo my Steelers all year and watch them in the evening. No sweat - I don't have to put up with commercials like the rest of you saps! 🙂 Unfortunately, as the Steelers are an AFC team, I do have to put up with the […]

I bought a Daiwa Capricorn 2500 on August 27. A few days ago, I noticed that they were on sale. I went back to Sports Authority, picked up a Shimano Stradic 6000. Normally $149, it was on sale for $112.49 - a savings of over $37. The Capricorn used to be $114.99, but was now […]

Canoe and Kayak

I just sent an email to the editors of Canoe & Kayak magazine: Hi, I'd like to do an article on Paddle Fishing (with a specific bent towards kayak fishing, or "yakfishing" as it's called). As you can tell from various forums, one of the largest of which is at paddle-fishing.com, "yakfishing" is a growing […]

Extinction

Over at "bsag" the author is talking about saving birds from extinction. I'm all for saving birds from extinction if we're the ones who put them there - by building industrial centers in their prime nesting areas, for example - but if nature is the one who's ruled them out, who are we to play […]

Old West Wing

As I watch the old episodes of West Wing as they play on Bravo, two thoughts strike me. One is that the show is dramatically much improved in recent years. Older episodes focused more on the personal lives of the staff members and not the interpersonal relationships of the staff members. Older episodes, partly due […]

PGL: “A Good Movie”

It seems that, in the end, the Project Greenlight crew may have cranked out a good movie after all. Unfortunately, the darn thing probably won't play in my market, so I'll have to buy the DVD. Project Greenlight - regardless of how unrealistic it may be (they edit the show not to show how things […]

Aerosmug

A few years ago Aerosmith performed with, I forget, N*Sync or the Backstreet Boys during the Super Bowl. Now they're opening with Britney Spears on the first NFL game of the season or something like that? I just saw the commercial a few days ago. Hrmph. I didn't know you spelled Aerosmith S-E-L-L-O-U-T-S. Lame. The […]

Tackle

Today I bought some light tackle to complement the semi-light fishing rod and reels my dad sent down with my mother on her recent visit. You can see it all here: Lovely, isn't it? The non-lure goodie bag was filled with Berkley Trilene (8 lb and 10 lb test, the 10 in "invisible green"), the […]

Free Speech… Sometimes

I'm in favor of free speech. I'm in favor of free speech all the time. Not sometimes; always. The link above describes the case of a comic book store clerk who was arrested and faces up to two years in prison for being the clerk at the time a cop purchased a comic book containing […]

The Movie of David Gale

I watched The Life of David Gale yesterday. Scratch that, two days ago. It was fairly interesting, albeit a bit slow. As soon as Constance was known to have leukemia, I kind of figured out the ending, and the only suspense was in whether he would actually die or not (I figured he would). Kate […]

Bravo for West Wing

I forgot to point out a few days ago that Bravo is showing every episode of West Wing at 11pm every night. Or something like that. Anyway, woo! I'm recording them all, and I'll certainly try to watch them before the TiVo fills up and explodes. What will happen this year on West Wing? I […]

Bad Boys II

Though it seems that some people think very little of Bad Boys II, I am going to see it for II reasons: The father of a friend of mine wired the house that explodes (in West Palm Beach, though the movie leads you to believe it's in Miami). The house through which someone drives a […]

Speaking of Grammar…

My previous post reminded me of a sign I saw outside of the Sam Snead Bar in the Palm Beach International Airport when I was waiting to pick up my mother and grandma last Thursday. The sign, very professionally designed, said something like: Get Your's Today! How many people making more than $50,000/year let that […]
