Windows XP Cheap and Airport Express Holdups

So, a long-lost Microsoft employee emailed me and will be supplying a copy of Windows XP Pro for $35. Yippee.

And Brad, who took time out from working on Iris, informed me that the four-week holdup on my Mac Pro is due to the Airport Express card, of all things. Apparently in the Mac Pro, the wireless cards have been combined (Bluetooth/Airport) into a new single card with a new form factor. They're not yet readily available, and so I have to wait. And wait. And wait.

Which is fine, because the price of RAM right now is way too high.

I really, really hope that Leopard*'s version of Boot Camp lets me run Windows in a window. Or at least even Fast-OS-Switch between Mac OS X and Windows.

* It took me awhile to think about what cat name the next Mac OS X is. Tiger? No. Panther? No, that was awhile ago. Tabby? No, that's 10.6, right? 😛

The Definition of Success

Success - /suh k-ses'/, noun - the happy feeling you get between the time you do something and the time you tell a woman what you did. (attr: Dilbert.)

Sounds about right. 😛

Expression v.X Software Download

Many years ago, I owned two sites: Sound Set Central and AppleScript Central. Both had sound sets and AppleScripts primarily for the Microsoft email clients, though some of the AppleScripts worked with iTunes, AOL Instant Messenger, the Finder, and other applications, and some of the Sound Sets could be used with other applications as well.

One of the things I had on Sound Set Central was a little REALBasic application for creating Sound Sets for Outlook Express and Entourage. Eventually I updated it to work with Mac OS X. The site has since been lost, but some people still email me occasionally requesting Expression v.X. So, since it's nowhere else, I'm posting it here: Download Expression v.X (.dmg, 2.16 MB).

If anyone is interested in the source code for the app, please IM me. There are enough Entourage users out there that someone may want to start something like Sound Set Central again. The two "central" sites made over $30,000 in advertising one year…

P.S. I still like the Dr. Evil soundset that's included on the .dmg file.

Windows XP Cheap?

With a Mac Pro on its way (some day), I suppose I must start looking for an inexpensive copy of Windows XP (preferably not "Home"). I plan to keep the two 500 GB drives as my main drives - one for backup - and use one of the 250 GB drives in my current G5 as the Windows XP drive.

Does anyone have an idea where I might be able to find the aforementioned inexpensive copy of Windows XP? What's the best route? $300 (or whatever) is way too much for software I'm only going to use often enough to check how some sites look in IE/Win.

Mac Pro On Its Way

The estimated ship date is October 6, 2006 and the estimated delivery date is October 16, 2006. I wonder if it'll actually take that long. I guess I can put off ordering my 4 GB RAM kit from RAMJet for awhile.

MAC PRO,CTO
  3.00 GHz Quad Xeon
  1GB 667 DDR2 FB DIMM ECC-2x512
  ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB
  500GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s drive
  500GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s drive
  2x16x SuperDrive DL
  Airprt Extrm & BT 2.0+EDR
  Apple Keyboard & Mighty Mse

Soon I'll have a dual 2.0 GHz G5 to sell.

BBEdit 8.5 Out

Version 8.5 is now available. $30 (for those upgrading from 8.0) gets you code folding, a better preferences window, a renamed Glossary, and, uhhhhh… we'll see.

I wonder if code folding can fold around matching <div> tags… something in me doubts it. I'm watching football or I'd be playing with BBEdit right about now.

And the new icon? Hardly something worthy of any excitement. I'm tempted to paste TextEdit's icon over it for the heck of it. 😛

Football is Here Already

Football season officially begins tonight as the Miami Dolphins venture to the 'Burgh. I don't know about you, but I'm not quite ready for football just yet. I also think the Dolphins will be stout this year, and though Batch is a capable backup, this will be a tough way to start the year for the Super Bowl champs.

QotD: Intel Inside Your Macs

Question: Expressed as a percentage, how many of the Macs in your home have Intel chips inside?

My Answer: 0%. But that could change soon.

QotD: iTunes Video Playback

Question: Why does iTunes' video playback still suck?

My Answer: Heck if I know. I switch apps and the playback halts for a few seconds. The framerate is sometimes terrible. QuickTime Player can do the same thing without any problem, so why can't iTunes? I don't know.

Lights in the Kitchen

These are the pendant lights Carey and I hung over Labor Day weekend. They replace some lame track lighting (the bulbs always burned out, they were 60 watt max, etc.). Though we didn't plan for it, the lights we chose ($20 for a set of three at Lowe's) really draws your eye up, adding height to the vaulted ceiling, and Carey's painting of the inner "walls" of the skylight really accentuate the window.

Pendant Lights

We're pretty pleased with the work, even if the picture didn't quite work out (took it at about 9:30 last night).

Steve Irwin’s Kids

So Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter, has died of a stingray tine to the heart. So be it - live by the sword, die by the sword they say. His wife, I heard, hadn't yet heard the news because she was backpacking somewhere remote.

I didn't have a problem when Steve Irwin took his newborn kid into the crocodile pit back in 2004. He's Steve Irwin, after all, and he knew what he was doing. I do have a weird problem with parents that are so quick to disregard the well-being of their kids by continuing to put themselves in so much danger, not to mention leaving them alone (or in the care of others) for long periods of time, as they both must be doing right now.

QotD: Labor Day 2006

Question: How will you spend your Labor Day?

My Answer: Watching golf, watching my wife paint, staining and varnishing, and cleaning up. I did electrical work earlier today to remove some track lighting and install some pendant lighting (I think that's what it's called). It was tough work, mainly because the wires weren't very long and I was joining two very stiff (short) wires with one longer but very thin wire into one junction (two lights in parallel). Ick. I'll post a picture when we clean up, though - it looks great.

Click

There's at least one reason to watch Click: Kate Beckinsale. 🙂 Well worth a dollar.

QotD: Favorite Sorkin Character

Question: Who is your favorite Sorkin character?

My Answer: I honestly couldn't pick, but if you can't remember them all, IMDb has a loooooong thread.

Little One and Leela

Carey took this picture with our point-and-shoot (the Canon SD 550). This is the little baby orangutan (Leela) at the Erie Zoo. Both Leela and her dad (Joe) respond very well to Little One (but nobody else) each time she's there.
