Question: Did you collect baseball cards as a kid? What did you do with them?
My Answer: Yes. I sold them when I was about 14 to a kid for about $250. Thousands of cards, but none worth very much at all. The most were worth $10. Back then, $250 seemed like a lot of cash.

Several times since upgrading to MovableType 3.2 at The Sand Trap .com, basenames have included a "_1" at the end. I have no idea why, and it's frustrating to have to go through and edit the basename and change the URL of any TrackBacks.
If I could understand why MovableType keeps putting "_1" perhaps I could tell the staff how to avoid getting it (because remembering to check for it has proved futile). Entries are not named the same as previous entries, so that's not the issue. What causes MovableType to append "_1" to the basenames?

I thought that Backup 3.0 would allow me to back up nightly, one disk to another. I didn't even care so much if the backup wasn't bootable.
I awake this morning to an error: insufficient free space on the destination.
Phooey, Backup. Are you still this useless?

If I had known that Steve Jobs wrote a chapter of the Bible, I'd have read it more carefully:
Theft is bad, you don't want to burn in Hell.
-- Jobs 9:20

Question: Do you have the "warn me when emptying the trash" warning turned on or off?
My Answer: Off. And I almost always use the keyboard shortcut. I put stuff in the trash only when I intend to erase it, so I usually just hit cmd-delete, shift-cmd-delete, and voilà! The files are gone. The one or two times I've ever accidentally deleted something, I retrieved it from my nightly backup.
Question inspired by Mike's Trash Bugs.

My friend Arion recommended Neil Postman to me, and to move his email out of my inbox, I'm posting her as my own reminder:

Amusing Ourselves to Death is one of my favorite books of his. Check
out some of the articles here though.
Thanks, Arion.

Could this guy write worse crap than this article? This has to be one of the dumbest, "wrongest," and "patheticist" articles I've ever read. Heck, Rob's only competition is his wife, largely for this review of the iMac G5.

Someone called in today to a radio show I was listening to and said, and I quote:
I think that the whole thing in New Orleans, all the death and destruction, that's God's way of getting us back for causing all that death and destruction over in Iraq and Afghanistan. If Georgie Dubya were as religious as he says he is, he should know that God is not gonna let you be an [beep] without some severe payback.
Uh… yeah, that's it.

Ahoy there me hearties! I've been watching too much The Wiggles to participate in International Talk Like a Pirate Day without sounding like the gay pirate from the show from down under (uhhh, The Wiggles, for those of you who have trouble figuring things out).
Shiver me timbers, matey! I celebrated this day two years ago, too.

MovableType's internal TrackBacks are still being throttled. I have no idea why. "mod_throttle" is not installed, so far as I know, and I'm fairly certain that mod_throttle would not have a mandatory waiting period of at least an hour or so.
Something is screwy. I'd like to be able to figure out what…

A few weeks ago I mentioned that the Logitech Harmony 520 caught my eye. A friend of mine mentioned that he could get me the Harmony 880 for about the same price as the 520. I took him up on the offer.
Unfortunately, I may be returning it soon. The remote set up easily, but now hangs any time I try to connect it to the computer. It just sits there, the computer says it's trying to "initialize the remote," and nothing happens. For hours. I emailed Logitech support mid-day on Friday and have yet to hear back from them.

Question: What is your favorite apple?
My Answer: Granny Smith. Just the right amount of sour and sweet and crunch. They're also usually pretty big, too.

Carey and I did a little "remodeling" in the master bathroom this past weekend. After several (several) weeks of delays, and after using another bedroom as a bit of a dry run (we painted it green about a month ago), we finally got around to redoing our master bathroom in a "honey wheat" color.
The list of changes is quite small, but it had a fairly dramatic effect:
- Walls are now no longer wallpaperered (we took that down a month ago) and no longer white. Instead, they're "honey wheat." All except the ceiling, that is.
- We replaced my black marble and clear lucite towel rack with an 18" silver one and installed a 24" silver towel rack for Carey and a silver hand towel loop (for anyone).
- We replaced the eight handles on our cabinets with "aged" black handles. They match the dark grey grouting in the floor nicely.
- We removed the old shower head and installed an 8" rain shower head (it drips for a minute after you turn it off, but seems to work quite nicely).
- We bought (a month ago) and finally hung two pictures. An additional semi-Japanese complementary picture was purchased and hung today as well.
- Some fake plants were purchased and placed on the ledge behind the two sinks.
Total Cost: around $300. Most of that was the new shower head and fixtures. The two pictures were about $39.99 apiece (from Target). We'll be returning some architectural pictures we thought might work, but intead blended in far too well.

The Steelers played arguably the worst team in the NFL (the Bengals and the Cardinals can breathe a sigh of relief, as can the 49ers) today: the Houston Texans. Every time David Carr looks like he's about to break through, he gets slammed on his back. Something like 151 sacks in 45 games. The Steelers added 8 to that total today.
But the defense didn't play well. They were susceptible to the run (113 yards) and to the soft pass underneath. Nothing long and some good stuffs and hits (as well as coughing up a fumble) - but 113 yards against a team with no O-Line and a nameless back or two? Not so spiffy.

Question: Have you ever crashed a wedding?
My Answer: Yep. I was leaving another wedding ceremony, had four hours until the reception I was going to, and saw a wedding and reception just starting down the street. So I went, sat on the groom's side, and helped myself to some of the food at the reception. Then I went to the reception to which I'd actually been invited. My college friend Jen was my partner in crime.
Carey and I saw Wedding Crashers the on Friday at Tinseltown. Good movie. Laughed out loud several times. Not as many times as everyone else, but that's pretty typical.
