Question: Where do you watch DVDs?
My Answer: I split them about 50/50 between my computer (when I'm doing work) and my TV (when I want to just watch a movie). Both are good for their purpose, but I wouldn't watch so much on the Mac without TransLucy.

Yes, you too can now kill nav-commenters.gif via a quick plugin from John Gruber. The problem wasn't what I'd call "horrifying," but as Gruber says, it was maddening like a piece of popcorn stuck in your teeth.
His small plugin is just the right piece of floss. Happy to have helped, though I don't admit to doing a whole lot. It worked nearly perfectly the first time I "tested" it. Just make sure you rebuild.

Some quick tips on photographing sunsets with a digital camera.
- Turn off the white balance feature.
- Let the sun get low to avoid damaging the CCD.
- Turn off auto-focus; switch to landscape mode.
- Turn around and look at the other images a sunset can produce.
- Shoot even after the sun's gone down.
- Use a tripod. Duh. Use a remote.
- Include foreground elements.
Sounds like a plan. I hope to catch some late sunsets over my golf course this year as well.

This 160-yard par 3 plays downhill and usually with a left-to-right wind. I took the ball at the right edge of the left bunker with a 7-iron and let the wind push it back.
It hit long, but sucked back down the ridge to about 15 feet. I two-putted for an easy par.

Question: If you could replace one of the seven deadly sins with one of your own, which would you replace and with what?
My Answer: I'd replace lust - it seems to be the most harmless, and it's also vague. I don't see much terribly wrong with lusting after the person you're with - it's lust for others that gets you into trouble. I'd replace lust with dishonesty, both with yourself and with others.

I've finally completed a project that's been about two months in the making: Build Your Own Putting Green (Cheaply!) details the relatively simple steps to build a low-cost indoor putting green measuring 8' x 8'.
Now comes the fun part: hooking up a computer to analyze my putting stroke. OK, I'm kidding.
But the project was fun: sawing, hammering, drilling. Gluing. And finally, putting. Three days ago I was playing golf. Today as I look out the window of my office, I see twelve new inches of snow and more on the way. To think my country club opens in less than a month?! We'll see about that, I suppose!

In about two to three weeks I expect to have a Canon Digital Rebel XT. I'll open the box. I'll skim the manual. And then I'll take lots of bad photos.
But they'll slowly improve. I'll keep them in iPhoto and Lightbox.
What I'd like is an easy way to publish my photos. High-resolution JPEGs, with a little space where I can post comments, the camera settings (f-stop, exposure, etc.), and where people can leave their own comments as well. A little piece of gallery software for the Web.
This gallery software should be attractive, functional, and relatively inexpensive (up to $200 or so?). So what's out there? I shudder to think of forcing MovableType into such a role… though if I absolutely had to, doing something like this wouldn't be so bad.

Question: What was the last Oscar-winning movie you saw?
My Answer: Did Caddyshack win any Oscars? 😀 It would have to be Titanic, even though I haven't seen it in a year and a half.

Well, I'm back from North Carolina. My trip featured, among other things:
- Nearly three full days with someone who's made my top-five list of "most annoying, clueless people in the world." The guy's a piece of work, and I could go on for hours. But I shall not.
- Five hours or so spent in the company of one of today's top twenty golf course designers. He may be ranked in the top ten, I can't say. An affable, intelligent man who's been in the biz a loooong time.
- A visit to the Payne Stewart statue behind Pinehurst #2's 18th green. And lunch in the Donald Ross Grill.
- Three rounds of golf, averaging about an 80 or so. Not bad with the layoff, the new clubs, etc. I made a birdie on each course.
- Relatively pain-free flights totalling about 1:45 in each direction. Though landing in Erie is always, uhhh, "eventful"…
Good trip, and fairly inexpensive. One I'm looking to do again sometime. Now back to work.

Question: What's the most interesting place you've been this week?
My Answer: The 18th green at Pinehurst #2. Why? Oh, just some fond memories…

Question: What's the most beautiful piece of equipment you own?
My Answer: I've intentionally left the question vague… but I chose the word "beautiful" over "sexy" for a reason. I've recently got a set of Titleist 680s, and they're gorgeous.

Question: Does your car stereo (or other story) have the RDS?
My Answer: The RDS is the thing that tells you the song name, artist, and radio station. Car radios without RDS always display "101.3." It's been out for awhile and I can't imagine it's terribly costly. My radio supports it, but only about half of the popular radio stations in Erie, PA broadcast RDS data.

Question: Do you still talk to your exes?
My Answer: No. None of 'em. I do talk to other people's exes, though… 😉

Question: Is Apple treating Mac users as second-class citizens with the push towards USB 2 over Firewire on new iPods?
My Answer: Yep. Apple, if you want to cater to PC people, just put both in the gosh darn box, mmmk? Firewire is faster.

I posted a story at The Sand Trap which discusses the distance professional golfers hit the ball these days. My conclusion is that distance is not everything, but that other factors, such as player conditioning, course conditioning, the lob wedge, and the spin players get from the rough are the main reasons scores get lower each year.
When looking at sport in the past 100 years, it strikes me that perhaps only tennis has undergone such a dramatic improvement due to equipment. Big-headed tennis rackets made out of graphite coposites replaced aluminum (which replaced wood) in the 1980s - just a few years before graphite and titanium stormed into the golf world. But even tennis falls short of golf's frenetic pace - the ball and the courts remain essentially unchanged.
