Feminists and “The Bachelor”

In Bring Back 'Studs': Feminism and the Nielson Ratings, Stephanie Harmelin, in addition to confessing to a Madridian makeout orgy, says:

The Bachelor is disgusting, pathetic and damaging to any feminist movement. And I'm hooked.

Jamie's got me thinking about "feminist" issues a lot lately. The whole "what's fair to women" and "how do we, as a society, put down women or pigeonhole them into childcare specialist or domestic goddesses" question.

OmniWeb 4.5

OmniWeb 4.5 sp1 (sneaky-peek 1) is available to people with a valid OmniWeb 4.0 key. Yay! That includes me. I downloaded it, gave it a try, changed the default font size to 16pt to mimick PC browsers (which actually uses 14pt currently). Sites looked nearly identical in both, and I was pleased. I'll stay up on the sneakypeeks, and continue using the version(s) of Safari that I've got (ahh, being an employee has its perks).

David Hyatt, in the link above, is asking for opinions on whether Safari should use 14pt or 16pt by default. My vote, though I admit to not caring a whole helluva lot, is for 16pt fonts, simply so that things "look the same" as they do on the PC. Regardless of which is chosen, I think that it should be changeable. Older people in particular might want to set their default size at 18 or 20pt.

MT Request: Forced Categories

I'd like to make a feature request for MovableType. I'd like it to force me1 me to choose a category. In other words, if I attempt to publish a non-categorized entry, it'd show some of that red text and say "Pick a category, foo!" Alternatively, I'd like to be able to search for all entries that are "Unfiled" so that I can assign them a category.

I like keeping my categories organized, for my own use and the use of others (I might choose to offer category-specific RSS feeds, for example). An entry that's not categorized would effectively vanish into the ether. Re: the search, there's currently no way to show "no category" posts other than looking at the entire list of posts, scanning for holes in the "Category" column.

1 Whether or not I'd be "forced" could be a preference I'd enable/disable.

Amy’s O

Jamie and I watched a Sundance flick last night called Amy's O (though the IMDB page refers to it as Amy's Orgasm). It was a cute flick that walked the line between feminism and reality (I know I'll catch flack for that one). In other words, it was a "chick flick" that put forth some, shall we say interesting ideas about relationships, but not so chick that it failed to remain interesting.

The jokes were pretty even-handed. The woman was not an angel and the man was not a pig. I'd mention some of the jokes, but they're the kind that deserve to be told within context. Haven't got much more to say on this - I'll update to link to Jamie's take on the movie if she ever posts one - just a general "thumbs up" for men and women alike.

American Idol: 8 Contestants

For some reason, my TiVo didn't record American Idol last night (grrrrrrr). This happens sometimes when I delete a Season Pass (Sports Night, duh, since I have the complete season now). I don't know. I've checked and all of my upcoming shows are in the To Do list.

I'll read Nick's take on this show and see what he has to say. He and I usually seem to agree on AI. Tonight I'll see who's voted off.

My Tablet Desires

I've got a 12" PowerBook. I've also got a full-powered desktop with a 23" Cinema HD. Sometimes I just wish I could use the PowerBook to "see" the tower. I've tried VNC and it didn't work very well. Apple Remote Desktop is overkill. I just want to view my tower's display, so i can see who IMed me while I'm watching a movie in the living room or to get a quick update on my email from bed. Is that too much to ask? Hrmph. 😐

Some Minor Changes Here

Some minor changes to the site today:

  • Now using those little rectangular images (scroll down and look on the left) for RSS feeds, CC License, link to MovableType.org, and Blogshares.
  • Updated my Linky Dinks section to reflect the current organization of my NNW subscription list. "Pals," for those who are wondering why you're in it (or not) consist of people with whom I've shared emails or IM conversations (or whom I know quite well from meatworld).
  • Added RSS 2.0 feed. Woo.

That is all. We now return to our regularly scheduled ridiculing of lame Macworld columnists. 🙂

OneWord: Answer

Nobody has the answer, yet everyone has the answer. Ask anyone. They'll answer you. The the more you know, the more you realize you don't know anything. The people who know more are thus less likely to give you an answer, aren't they? But it's more likely to be the right answer if they give it. Me? The only questions I'm 100% certain I can answer are those about myself, and only on a good day. Because much of the time I'm not even sure enough about myself to give a good answer.

Deatherage Drivel on X’s “Open Formats”

office_v_ilife.jpgIn the April, 2003 issue of Macworld, Matt Deatherage uses his brand new "The Big Picture" column to talk about Apple's open format movement. Deatherage talks about Keynote's XML format, the sharing that occurs between iPhoto/iTunes/iDVD/iMovie, and so on.

Deatherage begins with:

Any Keynote-compatible programs that spring up will only enhance the value of Keynote presentation files.

Unfortunately, that's very nearly his only correct statement. That sentence is immediately followed by a smorgasbord of inaccuracies, mistruths, and lies. Poor research? Did he do any? It's all good reading indeed, if you're a fan of fiction. Unfortunately, I'm not. Not on the back page of Macworld.

“Green” Declared “The New Yellow”

green_color_selection.gifNAB, LAS VEGAS - April 8, 2003 - NSLog();, in conjunction with Barzeski Enterprises, Inc., today announced that it has changed its "Highlight Color" to "Green." Said CEO Erik J. Barzeski "Green is the new yellow, and here at NSLog();, we believe in moving forward with our technology." He later added "Besides, yellow made it really hard to see what text you'd selected on Chris Pirillo's blog."

The change, made via the "General" area of the "System Preferences," will take effect immediately.

BT (Brian Transeau)

I was just now entering some new DVDs and I noticed that "BT" did the music on The Fast and the Furious. BT, or Brian Transeau, has of course been in the last few Apple PowerBook ads. Interesting. Probably not necessarily my kind of music, but maybe I'll check it out later.

My Freedom to VPS

This site, and all of my others, will be down for about 30 minutes tomorrow morning. After that, they should reappear at the new IP: 64.226.43.134. I'm not sure how long the propagation will take, but feel free to edit your hosts file after 10am EST to get to the new server.

Do I expect everything to go smoothly? Heeeeeell no. Will it? Gosh I hope so. I'll post the full story after it's done. Until then, feel free to catch up on a tiny piece of the back story.

Girl Who Cried Webmistress

Who isn't linking to this story today? It's a tale of how one guy's blog saved him from a very, very, very, very bad relationship. Reminds me a bit of my "friend" Danielle, the girl who never was.

The world is a weird, weird place, my friend.

OneWord: Demo

Demo is short for demonstration but never demolition, even though sometimes when giving a demo you'd rather be giving a demo. That makes no sense, but iWipe is currently in beta testing, and FTPeel will soon be a "demo" app of some kind, a public beta, and hopefully that won't turn into a demolition, though I guess we'll see. I'm happy with what Nick has done so far, i think, but like I said, we'll see. Demos are tricky.

TiVo Desktop

It seems TiVo Desktop is out. iTunes, iPhoto, etc. on your Series 2 TiVo. Because I have a Series 1, and because it's been modded (added an extra 80 GB drive), and because it's a "DirecTiVo" (TiVo + DirecTV receiver), I won't be partaking of the joy here. Oh well. 🙁
