Lately, my computer has been acting a bit strangely. Specifically, I'll come back and find that the computer is sitting at the login screen. My user is still logged in and all of my apps are running, etc. but I have to log in. I have not set auto-log-out in the Security pref pane (it's […]

I back up my personal settings (Address Book, iCal, Keychain, Safari Settings, and Stickies) nightly to .Mac. The full backup is 2.1 MB. That's fine. But I have 230+ other incremental backup files on my iDisk, and they are each about 1 MB. Needless to say, I'm wasting a lot of space. How can I […]

I've written about TypeIt4Me and Textpander before, primarily here and here. Now the newly renamed "TextExpander" is out with version 1.3 and the fine folks at "Smile on my Mac" have created a little chart showing how much better their product is than TypeIt4Me. The problem is, the things for which they get a check […]

$200? For 20 GB more space and a black shell? Bah.

Another QuickTime update (to 7.1), and still iTunes absolutely sucks donkey balls at playing videos. Ho hum. 😛

I have always been a fan of TypeIt4Me, and now the 3.0 version - which becomes a preference pane instead of an input method - is now available. I last wrote about TypeIt4Me here when I was comparing it to Textpander. Needless to say, now that Ti4M is a pref pane, it beats Textpander hands […]

I'm a Web developer. I use BBEdit. As such, ".html" files (and .php, and .inc, and .htm, and .cgi, and so forth) are set, by default, to open in BBEdit. I'm getting tired of applications assuming I've set HTML documents to open in a browser. Today, I clicked "Buy Now" in the FileMaker Pro v8 […]

This song happened to come on today: Erik is listening to "Winter Wonderland" by Eurythmics from the album "A Very Special Christmas" (1987). Erik has rated this song 3.0 stars and last played this song Wednesday, January 11, 2006 1:23:50 am. At about 2:05, I heard (a few times) what sounded almost exactly like the […]

Saft 8.3.0 adds "Tab Thumbnails" but whenever I turn them on (shift-command-option-T) I just get a solid metal window that covers the whole screen. Nothing like thumbnails… What up wit dat?

Michael Tsai points out the existence of ProFontX. Happy Easter to me! I've long struggled with either Monaco (10 point, typically) or the old ProFont in a few applications. In the Terminal, I was using MPW or Anonymous. In Entourage, ProFont (where things like "l/" would literally disappear from the screen). In Ecto, I just […]

Well, Remote Desktop 3.0 is out and some people are happy. Every time I hear about Remote Desktop and look at the $299 price tag, I simply wish Apple offered a one-user home version for $29.99 or something. That way, from downstairs on my PowerBook, I could do things like check Entourage, Adium, or some […]

I'm not sure why, but Spotlight misses files all the time. Today I tried to search for a file called "HoH.mov" by typing in "hoh.mov" into a "Find" window in the Finder. Two copies at "HoH.mov" from my backup disk appeared, but none from my startup disk. I looked on my startup disk and, yes, […]

Pardon me for thinking so, but $19.95 for A Better Finder Rename (or even $9.95 for the upgrade and $24.95 for the "forever" license) is a bit more than I'm willing to pay for a tool I need to use, at most, about once a month. But isn't there some sort of CLI tool that […]

Since when does 2993 - 233 = 3000? Since 10.4.5's calculator introduces a small bug when you change the precision to 1. Or change it to 2 and try 2006-1 (you get 2000). Found at Macworld.com. BTW, bonus tip regarding calculations: alias uni scale=4; !:1'`units !:2 !:3` | awk '{print $1, $2, $3}' | bc […]
