Carey jokes with me that I don't "do" anything all day except "read other people's blogs." Truth is, I do spend about 30 minutes per day reading other people's blogs. Like Judi's. Today, Judi writes that she worked for 233 hours in January.
I didn't work nearly that much in January, but I can say that I have easily worked that much in the past. After all, that's less than eight hours per day (every day of the month, yes)! When I was running Freshly Squeezed Software, 233 hours would have been a slow month. I miss the work, but I don't miss the hours. Or the customers. 🙂

Nobody invited me to the "Four Things" meme, but that's fine. I typically avoid memes. That doesn't mean, however, that I'm going to pull a lame-ass stunt like the 37 Signals folks. I don't use any of their products, though I know several people who do.
Here's more. And now that I've written that much, I may as well answer the actual questions.

For some reason, "RealPlayer" (the latest version) won't launch from my /Applications folder when it's named "RealPlayer." I'm told: You cannot open the application "RealPlayer" because it may be damaged or incomplete.
Renaming it "Real Player" or "RealPlayer X" or "Bob" allows the application to launch and work as expected.
WTF? Permissions are fine (they're repaired nightly). This makes almost no sense!

Question: Did you watch? What did you think, as a whole?
My Answer: No, and thus, I didn't think anything. Aside from comments here, I plan to avoid reading about it as much as possible today. 😐

Apparently, Mike Shanahan ain't the brightest bulb in the box either: he met with Terrell Owens!

Look at this word for awhile:
PEOPLE
Now tell me: does it look funny or what? Please, no replies of "what" are required. It'd show a serious lack of imagination. 😉

Question: Within five seconds, can you cite Genesis 1:1?
My Answer: I couldn't. It took me seven before I remembered how the bible kicked off its tale.

Question: What kind of gas do you put in your car?
My Answer: The Touareg gets the premium stuff. I don't doubt that it's barely better than the non-premium stuff, but it's peace of mind for an expensive (relatively) car. So pfffft. The Aztek gets 87 or the lower-grade stuff largely because it's what the manual actually recommends.

Question: Do you reboot daily?
My Answer: Heck no. Like Michael, I experience some sluggishness at first, but it tends to wear off after about ten minutes of use. I should check some day to see if it's due to heavy paging, as I do run lots of tasks at night that aren't normal - backups, etc. Perhaps my non-UI tasks take precedent and page out things like Safari, Entourage, etc.
At any rate, after ten minutes or so, my computer behaves as normally (and expediently) as it would after a reboot.

I'm considering disabling the comments feed for this site. Does anyone use it? It'd mainly be to speed up rebuilds, so if even a few people use it it probably won't be worth the gains. Just let me know.

As posted over at Billiards Drills .com, this weekend I'll be taking a class with Tom Simpson, a Master BCA (Billiards Congress of America) Instructor. He's one of ten in the world, making him pretty darn special. I've asked around, and his classes are apparently some of the best money can buy. So, I'm looking forward to it.

Question: Do you have any smart folders in your Finder?
My Answer: Nope. None. I never have, in fact, except the one I created a week or two ago to see that they were actually just an XML file.

Question: When was the last time you watched porn?
My Answer: I honestly don't remember. I haven't ever watched any in my house, so, nearly a year or more ago!

Seriously, a porn rating system? Real smart Republican there, that Senator Ted Stevens is.
Let's see, we have "B" for bestiality. Or is that "Butts"? "A" is like "Anal Penetration" or "Ass," and "L" would probably be Lesbian. Is "G" for "group" or "gay," then? I digress…
During a committee hearing on the Child Online Protection Act last week, he put the adult entertainment industry on notice that if it didn't come up with a rating system, Congress would do one for them.
Despite being voted down, I think that the ".xxx" domains and perhaps ".kids" are the best options.
But really, any Internet filtering software usually has one major problem: the kids are smarter than the parents and will find ways around it anyway. So, too, will the rest of the world. Any U.S. legislation on this issue is thus an egregious waste of taxpayer money.

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you!
Happy birthday dear Macintosh
Happy birthday to you…
…and maaaaaany mooooooooore!
Today is the Mac's 22nd birthday. He's in prime "selective service years" right now, but he can drink, download porn, drive, smoke, and do anything else an adult can do except collect social security. Like last year, I'm still looking at a 23" LCD attached to a dual 2 GHz G5 with 2.5 GB RAM about 18 peripherals, all running on a Unix-based OS for which I am developing. In fact, I was using the same hardware two years ago!
Happy birthday, Macintosh.
