QotD: Sports

Question: What's the largest sporting event in your town?

My Answer: The Erie Seawolves are currently the top draw, but that may be changing soon - they may be heading to Holyoke, MA. That'd be a pity - Jerry Uht Park is a great place to watch a baseball game, and the Seawolves have done reasonably well the past five years or so.

One Year of Hosting for $9

Found this deal mentioned over here: one year of DreamHost hosting for $9.

  1. Go to Dreamhost.
  2. Sign up for the Crazy Domain Insane package.
  3. Enter the code "777" in the special promotions box (it's near your $ total).

That's it! There is no, errr, step four. The total is $119.49 or so, but the discount - nearly $111 - takes that down to just over $9. I think my total was $9.46 - and it includes a domain name registration.

Looking to start your own blog? You would have a hard time beating $9/year!

QotD: Far Friends

Question: What percentage of the people you consider "friends" live within 50 miles of you?

My Answer: 10%. One out of ten. That's about it.

QotD: iCal

Question: In honor of iCal Day, what calendaring application do you use? iCal? Something else?

My Answer: I use iCal. But my scheduling app requirements are pretty darn simple.

Housewarming Party

Carey and I had our wedding reception/housewarming party today.

Most of my side of the family didn't show. My parents, my (maternal) uncle and his family, and my grandma (also maternal) were there. My sister and her husband and all of my dad's side of the family failed to make it, and only one (thank you, Aunt Betty!) bothered to send anything (even so much as the requested regrets at not being able to attend).

Carey's family and friends managed a little better - most of them showed up. Some did not (Jen?), and we hope all is well with them as they had even planned to come.

Carey and I (mostly Carey) were up late last night and up early this morning cleaning and getting ready. Carey's parents were great in setting up and throwing the party, and everyone liked our house. I plan to take a video while it's still clean for those who couldn't make it.

QotD: 40 iTunes

Question: As well as you might know me, how would you recommend I spend a $40 iTMS gift certificate?

My Answer: I'm looking to discover some new music. I like R.E.M., Live, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and bands like that. I'd rather not explore entirely new realms of music, but tunes along the lines of those or only slightly different might be nice.

BTW, thanks Aaron. A more formal "thank you" will follow, but "yes, I got my email" now. 🙂

QotD: Entertaining

Question: How often do you "entertain" at your abode?

My Answer: Never. Tomorrow doesn't count. I always make fun of people on TLC and HGTV when they're looking for homes. They all say they want to "entertain." I don't really know anyone that "entertains." Who are these people? Where do they live? Why aren't we friends with any of them?

QotD: Tiger’s Pay

Question: Tiger Woods just surpassed $50M in career earnings (in nearly 10 years on the PGA Tour). Is he underpaid?

My Answer: He makes more off the course in sponsorships and whatnot than any other athlete anywhere, so if we're including that money, no, he's not underpaid. If we're comparing him to every other professional sport - sports in which you're rewarded handsomely for your performance in the past and can make $10M/year (or more) - yes, he is. Nobody in any other sport has come close to being as dominating as Tiger has in his sport. And finally, if you look at it purely from a capitalism/free market perspective, well, Tiger is paid exactly what the market will bear.

QotD: Floppy

Question: When is the last time you used a floppy disk?

My Answer: 1995. Yes, it's been 10 years.

QotD: Jobby

Question: If you could turn any of your hobbies into an actual job (one that sustains you and your family), which hobby would you choose and what would you do with it?

My Answer: I've already done it. Twice. 🙂 Software development and Web consulting with a dash of Mac and golf thrown in to boot.

FSS Sold to illumineX

For those who haven't figured it out by now, I've sold Freshly Squeezed Software to Don Yacktman and Gary Longsine of illumineX. The sale actually occurred two months ago, but this week the domain names (and thus the web site and email) will be moved, completing the transition.

I cannot comment thoroughly on their plans for the company or its products, but last I heard they were planning to keep all of the products actively updated. PulpFiction 1.2.2 has been ready for quite some time, so I hope to see its release soon. The FSS "brand" should continue to exist - illumineX will also continue as a games company (Rock Star may move over to illumineX) - and that makes me happy.

Don and Gary know their stuff, and they've been writing Cocoa applications for a looooooong time. Since, y'know, before it was called Cocoa. I'm confident that FSS will continue to thrive under Don and Gary's leadership and skill.

Bitch About Erie .com

I've been thinking of starting a new forum called "bitchabouterie.com" (or something similar - go ahead and register the domain before I can, I don't care). People would, duh, use it to bitch about Erie, PA. Traffic lights, potholes, politicians, the lack of dog parks, the weather, whatever. Perhaps, and this may be a bit of a pipe dream, it could help people organize and to get some things done, fixed, repaired, and improved.

I am posting here because I know a few "Erie-ites" read my blog. If you're interested in such a thing, or have any suggestions or ideas, please let me know either by commenting here, emailing me (see sidebar to the right), or by sending me a message on AIM ("iacas").

If you're interested in partnering with me to do this, I'm particularly interested in hearing from you. You never know - I think such a site might get some media coverage down the road.

For Bud Landry

Bud, I hope this helps, since no email to you gets through. Your email ID has been replaced with "emailaddress" below.

PulpFiction’s Activity Viewer

Don has noticed one of my favorite PulpFiction features: transparency. Specifically, "transparency when you need it, none when you don't."

PulpFiction allows you to specify the opacity when the Activity Viewer is inactive. Mine's set for 25% - enough that I know where the window is (should I want to drag it somewhere), but transparent enough that I can see everything through it.

Passion of the Christ

I watched Passion of the Christ a few days ago, and frankly, I'm not sure what all the fuss was about.

Do religious groups not realize that they come off as flaky when they condemn things like a movie as being a filthy piece of trash? How is it not saner for them to say "we disagree with the portrayal of Christ's crucifixion, and if you want to know why, just ask us."
