What is Syndication?

I posted an article on The Sand Trap introducing that site's Atom and RSS feeds, and wanting to explain what in the heck "syndication" was to the unwashed masses, attempted to find a web page that did just that.

The best Scott and I could find is perhaps this page. Is there a site out there that explains just what in the heck "syndicated content" is to people? Such a page should probably be devoid of explaining what XML is and should almost certainly not display any XML.

In other words, a page my mom could read and understand. Where is it?

QotD: Moving

Question: If you had to move yourself, what percentage of your "stuff" would you keep?

My Answer: ~80%. I'm going to ditch things like my CD tower, my DVD rack (it cost about $30 ten years ago), and some other stuff. My stereo works fine, but I never use it, for example. I'm throwing away any paper type stuff that I don't need. I'm taking my furniture, though I don't even care for all of it, as Flint chewed one piece up pretty good when he was being "watched" by some friends two separate weeks. Hrm. 😛 I should start packing soon.

CrashReporter

This is handy:

defaults write com.apple.CrashReporter DialogType crashreporter

Of course, you can stipulate "none" at the end as well.

QotD: Porno

Question: For what amount of money would you star in a porno?

My Answer: Five million bucks. For that much, I wouldn't have to worry about going into politics, and as a guy, society is far less likely to label me a slut or a whore. 🙂 My (future) wife and I could do a lot with five million bucks - the interest alone would generate $250,000/year, and that's plenty of spending money (and a lot of golf).

Nike/Apple Sneaks

Hey, want a pretty nifty set of sneakers you won't find anywhere else? Bid on them and they could be yours.

MailDrop: Free Upgrades

MailDrop 2.0 will be shipping in early November. As this is FSS's first "2.0," we're going to do it right: anyone who purchases MailDrop 1.3.3 between now and the release of MailDrop 2.0 will receive MailDrop 2.0 at no additional cost. In other words, a free upgrade.

MailDrop 1.3.3 costs $59. MailDrop 2.0 will cost $79, and upgrades for existing MailDrop 1.x customers will be $20. We may run introductory pricing for a week or so (no less than the current price of $59), but I can't guarantee that just yet: if you want MailDrop, now's the time to get it.

MailDrop 2.0 is going to add a significant feature set, including unlimited custom variables, timed mailings, ODBC import of recipients, multipart/mime messages, threading, sending through a recipient's SMTP server, and more.

MailDrop 1.0 was our first major project, and we've learned quite a bit. Some of the code from 1.x has survived, but MailDrop 2.0 is a near-complete rewrite using bindings, an SQLite database, and the much-improved DataCrux to bridge the two.

Ballmer a Clueless Dolt

Says Steve Ballmer, the man whose platform and OS ran Napster for quite a few years:

iPod users are music thieves. We’ve had DRM in Windows for years. The most common format of music on an iPod is 'stolen'.

To Ballmer: you're a friggin' idiot. Sit down and shaddup. Read more at silicon.com.

Cypress Creek

I played Cypress Creek today, a golf course with an incredibly lame website. The course is just north of Boynton Beach Boulevard on Military Trail. Today was a business meeting as well as a chance to see if I was still playing well. The meeting went well, and I played fairly well too.

RIP Justin Strzelczyk

Former Pittsburgh Steeler Justin Strzelczyk died after being thrown from his pickup truck after a crash with a hazardous materials tanker truck on I-90 in NY. He had led police on a 37-mile high-speed chase, thrown a beer bottle at them, and crossed the center line. The driver of the tanker was released without injury.

More information here and here.

Justin, in his playing days, embodied the spirit of the Steelers: a hard worker who'd punch you in the mouth play after play. It's unfortunate that he chose to do the things which resulted in his death.

Updated Script for BBEdit and FTPeel

I've finally gotten around to updating my favorite AppleScript for BBEdit so that it works properly with BBEdit 8's "tabbed" windows:

set filepath to ""
tell application "BBEdit"
set thisFile to (active document of front window)
    save thisFile
set filepath to file of thisFile
end tell
tell application "FTPeel"
    open filepath
end tell

QotD: AIM Icon

Question: What's your AIM icon (iChat, Adium, whatever you use)?

My Answer: Currently it's a part of a golf ball. However, I'll soon be changing it to something else. Previously it was part of the Project Builder icon.

PGA Village: Dye Course

One of my goals before leaving Florida was to play a few of the more exceptional courses in the area. To that end, today I went to PGA Village in Port St. Lucie to play the Dye course. José, Gabe, and Rob filled out the foursome and the weather cooperated.

You can see some images here, though I recommend you not look if you've got a decent golf swing. You may not after checking out some of those photos. 🙂

A great time was had by all, though I wanted to hit my driver on the first tee… at the lady who said "It's gonna be a loooooong day" after one of my playing partners teed off. Grrrrr.

QotD: Design

Question: If you could design anything, what would it be and why?

My Answer: I'd design a golf course, because courses are beautiful, they bring enjoyment to people's lives and preserve green spaces, and almost nothing else can be "used" so differently by so many different kinds of people.

When you answer, please consider only things that exist today, like speakers. Don't list flying cars or anything silly like that, okay?

Golf Bonaventure

I was bored yesterday and didn't feel like doing work, so I ducked out at 2 and arrived at 3 to play the East course at Bonaventure Country Club. At 6519 yards from the whites (and 7001 from the blues), the course was in a mucky, muddy condition. None of my drives rolled at all, and the furthest one ended up from the point of initial impact was about one yard. The greens were also dead sticky too - not a good thing if you're playing a knock-down into the wind, which was breezy all day and 10-15 MPH.

I had one of the best rounds of golf I've ever had, and if a few of the lip-outs had gone in, I'd have shot par. My ball-striking and direction were solid all day, and I played nicely. My swing thought was "just use your arms," trying to remove a "jump" in my legs and fast rotation of my hips. I hit nearly every shot at 85% or so to maximize control.

TypeKey Entries

For some reason, comments from people who log in via TypeKey are not showing as TypeKey comments. I'm not sure what the deal is there, but I'm going to upgrade this blog from MT 3.0.1D to MT 3.1.1 now. Templates and the display of this site may be screwy for awhile. We shall see…
