Freshly Squeezed PulpFiction Theme

Dan Lynn submitted a PulpFiction theme today, saying:

I liberally borrowed the look of this theme from a really spiffy website that you may have ran across. 😉 … I've tested this theme out on the feeds from all my subscriptions and resolved all issues. The title links to the story and the site name links to the site's homepage. I didn't use any JavaScript in the layout - just pure css.

You can grab this Theme from the "Themes" page at the PulpFiction Resources Page. Themes contain subfolders with images, and "Styles" are just HTML + CSS (without accompanying images). The screenshot above also nicely shows off PulpFiction 1.1.x's new Subscriptions View.

If you've got a theme or a style, submit it! Just email them to, well, any email address @ freshsqueeze.com.

Assault Weapons Ban

Jeff's notes on last night's debate (I watched the Yankees/Red Sox and unpacked some more before Carey came over) include this snippet:

16th: Assault weapons ban. Why not extend? Bush: "I thought we oughta extend it. But the bill would never move because people of both parties were against it." (Obvious question: Why didn't you try anyway? Obvious answer: Other priorities. At this point, debate in my head better than one on tee vee.) Law abiding citizens oughta be able to own a gun, but I believe in background checks. Best way to protect citizens is to prosecute gun crimes. I built a task force. Prosecutions are up by 68%. Kerry: Failure of prez leadership not to reauth. I am a hunter. (What did he say about bagging a 16-point buck? How many people have ever actually seen a 16-point buck??) I know something about prosecuting. Most law enforcement agencies wanted AWB. Drug bust in Iowa, guy had AK-47. Yeah, he ran out and picked it up week after ban expired. He didn't have it in his closet long before that, Senator. Would you be interested in buying some beach-front property in Florida, Senator? Terrorists can buy AW at gun shows. (Bush just said he supports background checks at gun shows, duh.) Good Kerry answer, stupid about the "I am a hunter" and the-old-shack-in-the-woods things, though.

Kerry ain't no hunter, and the NRA has backed Bush. When the Democrats get their heads out of their asses and stop treating the American public like a bunch of idiots ("No, really, I'm a hunter. See this photo of me [incorrectly] holding a shotgun [without ear or eye protection]?!?"), then perhaps they'll earn my confidence.

It's not that I'm very much "for" Bush, but I'm very much against Kerry. That runs opposite of the way many people think these days, but then again electoral-vote.com has Bush up 284 to 228 today.

QotD: Unpacking

Question: When unpacking, what's the first thing you worry about? Second? Last?

My Answer: The computer, then the entertainment center. Last? The bedroom, the kitchen, the bathroom… any of those, much to the dismay of those who love me. 🙂

DirecTiVo Local Channels

I'm trying to figure out how to get local channels (or at least ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX - the network stations) here on my DirecTiVo in Erie, PA. I've asked a question at the TiVo Community forums, but if anyone has any advice, feel free to post a comment here on my blog as well, eh? Thanks!

P.S. Solved.

QotD: Superman

Question: Which Superman movie was your favorite?

My Answer: It's been so long for me that I can't remember which was which (the one with the moon was my least favorite, though), but I'm curious what people have to say. Y'know, given the fact that Superman died.

QotD: Song

Question: What is the last song you heard. If you have music playing now, what is it?

My Answer: From an AppleScript I wrote for this purpose: Erik is listening to "Bad Day (Amended Album Version)" by R.E.M. from the album "Bad Day - Single" (2003). Erik has rated this song 4.0 stars and last played this song Wednesday, September 1, 2004 1:33:53 PM.

QotD: Gas or Electric

Question: For your cooking (oven/stove) needs, gas or electric?

My Answer: Always electric. Gas is soooooo slow. Yes, I realize that (supposedly) it leads to a more even cook, but the speed just doesn't cut it for me.

QotD: iMac Colors

Question: What is your favorite color iMac G5?

My Answer: I like the one called "Carbon." It'd be awfully damn nice if they had actual photos and not lame renders, though. And yes, I'm posting this a day ahead of time - I'll be packing and hopefully driving to PA tomorrow (and the next day).

PulpFiction 1.1.1

pulp_fiction.jpgWell, PulpFiction 1.1 had a pretty nasty bug in it. It'd crash on startup if an article did not have a title. We were releasing an auto-released object. Silly us.

The fix - version 1.1.1 - is available now at http://freshlysqueezedsoftware.com/downloads/PulpFiction.dmg.

Sorry 'bout that, folks. We goofed.

P.S. Please note that by downloading directly, you skip the download survey, which has a nice surprise if you fill it out completely. If you're upgrading, well, the surprise won't matter. But if you're a new customer looking to buy, you want the surprise. Download it via the product page for that.

QotD: Stock Price

Question: Where will Apple's stock price be on January 1, 2005? I'll give whomever is closest (your vote must be in by the end of the day in my time zone on October 15, 2004) two free licenses to the FSS software of their choosing. Vote once only or be disqualified.

My Answer: $32.23. It's at about $40 right now, but that just doesn't seem right. I got a bunch of Apple stock just this year (granted, it was January) at about $16.

Special Apple Shoes

These still don't have any bids. These are the same shoes mentioned in this article and have never been worn. They sell for $150 - you can get this pair for $100.

PulpFiction 1.1

pulp_fiction.jpgPulpFiction 1.1 is now available. This version includes a number of updates, including something mentioned previously here on NSLog();, the subscription view. It's tucked nicely into the folder view, giving us the best of both worlds. The complete change log is hidden "behind the fold." Click to read more.

PulpFiction 1.1 is a free upgrade. PulpFiction Lite 1.1 is also available.

QotD: One Question Each

Question: If you were a special guest star during the Presidential debates, and had but one question to ask each candidate, what would you ask them?

My Answer: I can't think of anything to ask Bush, so I'd waste my question on him to amuse myself. Nearly everything has been asked of Kerry except for one thing that matters to me, and so I'd ask him about guns:
Bush: What is the square root of 81?
Kerry: What is your position on firearm ownership, and what criminology studies do you have to strengthen your position?

I haven't checked in on the NRA, but what little reading I've done on their stance on gun ownership belies an ignorant, typically Democratic take on things. One that ignores the studies of criminologists and relies on a dead 5-year old somewhere to tug at heartstrings despite the facts.

State your questions, talk about their aims, but do not question or criticize the comments of others.

QotD: Text Editor

Question: What is your preferred text editor's favorite feature?

My Answer: I use BBEdit, and I think I like that I'm used to it the most. "Vast numbers of preferences" isn't one feature, or I'd consider saying that. I'm used to it. It's entrenched. I "get" it, and I can get around it very, very, very easily.

This makes accepting any other text editor, despite its actual feature set, a very difficult task.

TextMate

So, we all know what Allan has been working on lately: TextMate is available for $39 for a limited time before it rises to $49. The icon is rather hideous, and the product is introduced with this sentence:

It's time to turn envy into pride and end your desire for Windows- and UNIX-based editors once and for all.

Uhm, the only thing I envy is the tab view available in EditPlus Pro (or whatever I'm thinking of). BBEdit's isn't quite up to par. However, neither is TextMate's, and my brief run through provided little inspiration. I opened a PHP file and there was no syntax coloring. I hit cmd-, to see the preferences, and the app beeped at me: there are no preferences. I don't want to set some preferences for every file I open. Control toggles menu items? The tabs look rather ugly. Uhm…

My first reaction is not favorable. I'll play with it some more. Comment with your own opinions, good or bad (or both).
