Carey Plays Golf

Carey and I played nine holes at Green Meadows today. Green Meadows is the course I first played at when I was 15, and have toured the course in 68 before. It's tough for its length (about 6,000 yards) because the greens are smaller than many people's living rooms, each have a false front, and are typically quite firm. You needn't hit the ball straight, especially on the front, as the course is wide open. The rough can be a bit snarly and spotty at the same time, making for some interesting lies.

Carey shot 71, and I was quite proud of her. About 24 of those shots were putts. She had good form for someone who's never really played golf before - I think she may have uncovered a talent she didn't know she had. Even if she shoots 71 the rest of her life (and she won't - her putting and chipping have to get better, after all) then that's ok - we had a great time with each other. I can't say we wouldn't annoy playing partners, but we had fun together.

Eight is a par 4 with water fronting the green, and my 3W put me in good position. My 5I leaked right and I left myself with a very tough pitch. I laid open my new lob wedge, threw the ball really high in the air, and landed the ball just on the green. It bounced, bounced again, and rolled a foot into the hill. I raised my arms in the air and looked over at Carey, calmly practicing the swing for her upcoming chip shot, unaware of my rather handy birdie. Geeeeez! 😀

QotD: Golfing

Question: If you've ever played golf, what was your score your first time out on a regular (not executive) course?

My Answer: My first score was 98. I'd beat enough balls with the 7-iron I had in a field to develop a swing that was at least capable of breaking 100. I was also 15, so my putting was your typical "putts like a kid" variety. Four footers look like tap-ins at that age.

QotD: IM

Question: When you're using the Internet or otherwise "online," what percentage of the time are you on an instant messaging client?

My Answer: I'm on it 24/7. When I don't want to be bothered, I put up an away message, but I never "hide" from people online. I'm pretty blunt - if I'm busy and you say hi (which is fine), then I'll ask "I'm busy, talk to you in an hour?" and cut any potential time wasted short.

QotD: TypeKey

Question: Will this entry force you to get a TypeKey ID?

My Answer: I'm so sick of comment spam - the simple flooding that can occur when I'm asleep for a few hours is ridiculous and something MT-Blacklist can't stop - that I've turned on registration (for now). We'll see how this goes…

Yesterday with Carey

Yesterday's events in quick summary format:

  • Dropped Carey off at the high school at which she's student teaching.
  • Put down security deposit on townhome.
  • Visited uncle (the jeweler) to look at engagement rings and wedding bands.
  • Visited grandma in Bedford, PA. Went to Hoss's.

On the way home, we stopped to see some friends of Carey's in Cranberry.

Did you know that once, David Letterman rated "worst high school mascots" and my high school was second and Cranberry was first (the "North East Pickers" [grape pickers, that is] and the Cranberry Cranberries).

It was a beautiful day. Well, it rained and the weather was ugly, but I was with Carey. It was a beautiful day.

QotD: Printing

Question: How often do you print from your computer?

My Answer: I print things to PDF about once a day. I print to paper, oh, once every week or two - usually a Pizza Hut coupon or directions to a new place. Receipts and confirmations are printed to PDF and filed away (and, weekly, backed up, etc.).

QotD: Small

Question: What's the smallest place in which you've ever lived?

My Answer: College dorm rooms are, what, 10' x 20' or so? Or 15'x 20'? Either way, there's my answer. And, I supposed that technically I lived in half of that space.

QotD: Why Are You?

Question: Why are you (Democrat || Republican)?

My Answer: I am a Republican because I believe in a smaller government.

What are Blogs?

Today I had a cheese sandwich for lunch. It was really good. Do you like cheese?

ScrappleFace

I've left off the first part of this article, but I've quoted what I found to be the funniest from an article called "Kerry Calls Bush Poll Lead 'Wrong Bounce at Wrong Time'."

Mr. Kerry, a Vietnam veteran and distinguished anti-war protestor who is also a U.S. Senator, said the "polls don't mean anything to me right now."

"A couple of months ago when I was leading Mr. Bush, the polls were clearly an accurate barometer of public sentiment," he said. "But now they're wrong, wrong, wrong."

The Democrat candidate said he if he were conducting the polling research, "I wouldn't have just done some things differently, I would have done almost everything differently. As a consequence, we wouldn't have had some of America's finest men bogged down in this unwinnable conflict--dare I say, this quagmire."

President Bush, asked to respond to Mr. Kerry's latest attacks said, "The W stands for 'whatever'. That's my response. Next question."

Whatever.

(I'm going to be on a plane today, so in my absence, please behave. Talk amongst yourselves if you must, but don't bother bashing me for posting this - I won't see it, and when I'm with Carey, I won't particularly care. :-D)

Gone for a Week

I'm leaving later today to fly to Erie to see Carey, find my new apartment, and that sort of thing. To anyone thinking that this will make my apartment an easy target for theft, think again! I've got a full-time house-sitter. We went to the shooting range the other day and he's accurate enough to take out anyone silly enough to invade! Okay, not that I expect that in a million years, but… I'm just happy to be going back for a week.

I'll check email (and my subscriptions in PulpFiction, or PF as we call it), so reach me that way if you need or want anything.

What’s This?

Something for PulpFiction 1.0.3…

Next week sometime.

QotD: Scam

Question: What's the worst scam for which you've ever fallen?

My Answer: I once bought a "porn tape" that supposedly caught two famous women going at it. I knew it was rather silly, and I knew it was a scam so I didn't exactly "fall" for it, but it amused me to the tune of $9.95 (for a DVD no less!) anyway.

Clinton Gun Ban Sunsets

The Clinton Gun Ban is no longer law. Today, I can legally purchase and own 15-round magazines for my two guns. And, honestly, that's about the only change as far as I'm concerned.

Of course, Kerry attempted to seize the moment to make some kind of point, but ended up falling flat on his face.

Presidential candidate John Kerry promised over the weekend that he would "take on the terrorists" who attacked the U.S. on 9/11 by forcing them to obey America's gun control laws. Kerry said laws like the Assault Weapons Ban, which expires today, were valuable "not just to fight ordinary crime but to take on terrorists."

I won't even comment on the stupidity of that kind of comment. And please, don't ask me to in the comments, because if you're so silly that you need an explanation as to why what Kerry said is D-U-M-B dumb, then, well…
