PNC Park 3

Just giving Photon a try… I've already bought it, so I hope it's worthwhile. 🙂

PNC Park 3

Eh, it's OK. It could use a little more customization - the title of this post is kind of silly, and I of course can't edit this text. I'm doing so after the fact. I think it missed posting the category as well, even though I selected one.

Multimedia Instructor

multimedia_instructorNow I ask you, gentle blog visitor: what in the hell does "3D modeling" and "Animation" have to do with "E-Commerce" and "PHP"? My goodness: this has to be one of the worst jobs ever!

Talk about "jack of all trades, master of none." The minimum requirements for this kind of job must be "can you identify which applications might be used for 3D animation?" Experience in "one or more of the following"? Huh? I mean, I consider myself to be fairly competent at PHP, which is exactly the reason I've stayed away from ASP. ColdFusion? That shit is still around, and people still want to learn it?

There must be some real top-quality instructing going on at the Erie Institute of Technology, I tell you!

Wowee.

Anyway, yes, I'm kinda looking for a job up in Erie. I'll, after all, be giving up the little consulting business I've built up down here in southern Florida. It'll also be good to have health care again. Ideally, I'd like a braindead job that will get me through the winter so that I can return to playing golf whenever I want during the spring days and working on FSS in the evenings, rainy days, etc. During the winter months, I'll have two jobs and can thus save a good amount of money for a house. Carey and I seem to have the same ideas, so that's good. Really though I'm just trying to type so that what I've written reaches the bottom of this really tall ad.

Have I got there yet?

I give up.

QotD: Postal

Question: FedEx, UPS, or USPS?

My Answer: I despise UPS. Utterly despise them. FedEx is great, as is the USPS. I can't recall anything I've gotten from UPS in the past four years that didn't look as though it had been kicked, punched, dropped, and treated badly.

Garden State

I saw the movie Garden State with Arion today. He didn't care for it as much as I did. The movie is very real, and I saw bits and pieces of nearly all of my close friends and the relationships I've had with them through the years. It was human, it was funny, it was sad, and the romance was played at just the right level. Zach didn't play the same old Scrubs character in more than a scene or two, when called for. The movie is clever without being too clever, cute without being too cute, and done well without being overdone.

And hey, a blog! I hope I can take Carey to this movie when I'm up in PA mid-September. And then buy the DVD in a few months.

QotD: New Olympic Sport

Question: What new Olympic sport would you like to see?

My Answer: Tactical shooting. In other words, running around a course, ducking behind things, having targets pop up. Kinda like you'd see in the movies. Besides, Jay already took the coolest idea: team fencing.

Athletes as Role Models

Yesterday I saw a commercial that said something like "to those of you who say that athletes shouldn't be role models, may we suggest that perhaps you're looking at the wrong athletes?" The voice spoke over images of Olympic swimmers, gymnasts, and other world class athletes and competitors.

While I've always believed that a child's parents should be their first, strongest, and most important role models, I also believe that children won't appreciate their parents until they've left home and set out on their own. During the teen years, who do they look to for role models? Religious individuals, community leaders, and the like are fine. Schoolteachers are admired by many. But many kids look beyond the homegrown - they're aspiring to make something of their lives, after all.

Once we look to this realm of "famous" people, what choices have kids got? Athletes. Models. Actors. Musicians. Industry leaders, scientists, and politicians don't seem to inspire kids much, so they're easy to omit. Each of those groups has its "bad seeds," but because maintaining a famous position as an athlete is difficult while abusing your body and living poorly, athletes seem to be some of the cleaner living folks in that crowd.

QotD: Keynote

Question: Has Keynote been orphaned by Apple?

My Answer: Khoi seems to think so. Me? Well, all signs point to yes. I'm also wondering where in the hell my AppleWorks update may be.

QotD: Garden State

Question: Have you seen Garden State? What did you think?

My Answer: I want to. Perhaps I'll get out to see it tomorrow evening. I like Scrubs and the previews looked interesting. I'm not a Natalie Portman guy - she's cute and all, but that's where it ends for me - but I do like movies with a good story, and this seems to have that in spades.

Golf at Emerald Dunes

Today I played at Emerald Dunes, a widely revered course that features an American linksy design (by Tom Fazio). Rated as one of the "Top 100 You Can Play" in the US by Golf Magazine, I played after 2pm during the summer for $40. The course features a "SuperDune" on which you'll find three tees, three greens, and "unlimited panoramic views." Uh huh.

I wasn't nearly as impressed as I thought I might be. The course is similar to The Links at Madison Green, but at least Madison is smart enough not to label anything on their course as "SuperSomething." Anyway…

Tiger to Lose World Number One?

Will Tiger Woods lose his #1 ranking in the world? The margin is slim: 11.93 to Singh's 11.83 and Els' 11.38. It's quite possible that after the WGC NEC Invitational, Tiger could be second or even third.

  • Vijay Singh will be ranked higher than Tiger if he finishes ahead of Woods in the NEC or if the two players are tied outside the top 10.
  • Els will reach #1 if he is third alone, Woods is worse than 15th alone, and Singh is worse than 19th alone.
  • Els could also overtake #1 if he's second alone and Woods finishes worse than a two-way tie for 4th and Singh finishes worse than a two-way tie for third.
  • Finally, Els can also grab #1 if he wins and Woods finishes worse than second alone.

QotD: Michelle Wie

Question: What do you think of Michelle Wie?

My Answer: She's won very little. She's over-hyped. She's 14. 2-up going to the sixteenth hole at the recent US Women's Amateur (played at one of my local courses), she said:

I knew she was going to come back… I left myself in a really hard position.

2-up with three holes to play is "a really hard" place? Since when? She's won one thing so far - the 2003 Women's Amateur Public Links championship - and has placed highly in some LPGA tournaments. She made the cut at a men's professional tournament.

Known for frequently powering her drives over 300 yards, Wie hit a driver on the 379-yard, par-4 No. 17, but missed the fairway and failed to get up and down. Her bogey left the match all square.

When you're one up going into the 17th, you're looking for a tie or a win on the hole. Put the pressure on your opponent to make birdie - don't let them win the whole with a par. A two iron and a sand wedge would have probably guaranteed par for Wie, and on such a short hole, perhaps even a birdie. Wie later said:

I think I got a little too aggressive.

Duh! But this is part of it. She's 14, she's relatively new to competition, and she's gotta learn how to handle herself and manage the course. When she wins an LPGA tour event without crumbling towards the end, then I'll reconsider. Until then: she hasn't proven herself at all. It's an interesting story, but that's about it.

DropCash for PulpFiction for the EFF

I've now set up a DropCash account for the PulpFiction for the EFF drive. Today is August 19, which means that you've got about 11 days to donate $50 to the EFF and to get your blog's feed listed in PulpFiction's default subscriptions.

As the page says:

For any donation of $50 or more, your personal blog will be listed as a default subscription in PulpFiction. Freelancer blogs are welcome but company blogs are not. You may donate on behalf of others or for several of your own blogs if you wish. FSS will match the total donation (up to $2500) and all funds raised will be donated in the name of PulpFiction and its users to the EFF in early September. Fundraising will take place from now until the end of August 2004.

I've set the goal to $2500 at DropCash, but you're still free to use the link provided when I originally posted.

Help a PC Guy

I got this email from someone recently. If you can lend a hand, by all means, leave a comment and help the guy. He's most likely using a PC, so, keep that in mind:

Tell me what you think of this idea. I was recently looking for one central place to manage my whole life. You know that as we get older there is more stuff to remember and less brain cells to do it with. Do you know of any website or personal software that have the following categories:

  • Budget
  • Bills
  • To Do
  • Calendar
  • Reminders, like outlook but sent to your cell phone via text message.
  • Personal Goals
  • Fitness - keeping track of diet and exercise schedule
  • Gold Handicap Tracker - PGA cert.
  • Fantasy Sports Tracker
  • Memo
  • Ideas
  • Password Tracker
  • Projects

If you're interested in developing something like this, he's asked if that's possible (if such a site doesn't exist).

I know that what he wants can be accomplished with about… five pieces of software (budget, bills in Microsoft Money or something, to do, calendar, reminders, goals, memo, ideas, projects in some PIM or CRM, sports in a sports thing, golf handicap in some golf app, and there are a number of password trackers out there).

Anyway… that's that. Lend a comment if you have an idea or can help.

Breaking a Lease

My lease (an apartment here in south Florida) is up at the end of May, 2005. However, it looks as though I'm moving back to Pennsylvania as early as October or November of this year.

What advice does anyone have for getting out of the lease as quickly and painlessly ($$$) as possible? Finding someone else to pick up the remainder of the lease (or subletting) is not an option. I've never been late in paying rent for the 3 1/2 years I've lived here, and they have $1000 in security and pet deposits that they can keep. To those suggesting I suck up the 2 month penalty charge, well, that's $1800 and a lot of money I'd rather just avoid having to pay if possible.

I'm on friendly, polite terms with the woman who runs the leasing office, but I am not sure I can go in and say "hey, is it OK if I give you two month's notice right now and leave? I fell in love and need to be with the woman who will be my wife some day…" I've heard that there are lawyers that take a month's rent to get you out of your lease, but I haven't found any through Google searches.

So, what to do? If you've got a suggestion, by all means, let me know.
