PulpFiction: I've mentioned this application several times. I've displayed its icons. I've joked about it. I've hinted at it. It's been listed on the Freshly Squeezed Software site since before the introduction of Rock Star. I could claim I've been trying to build a buzz, but in reality, we've just been taking our time getting it done. 🙂
Originally intended to be released October 24 (does that date ring a bell?), I can now announce that PulpFiction should be out on May 15. Beta testing will begin May 1. The price will be set sometime between those two dates. Almost all of our features are done - we're bug-squashing and internally beta testing.

Question: Have ya ever smoked pot? And don't give me any "I didn't inhale" jokes either.
My Answer: Ummm, nope.

Are there any WebObjects developers in South Florida? Are there any available WebObjects developers in South Florida?
I can't say much about the possible plans right now, but needless to say from what I've written above, I'm putting out a feeler right now to see if there's anyone around. I may need them soon (in the next four months) for ongoing employment (i.e. not a two-month gig).
Don't send résumés or anything. This is the earliest of feelers. It may go nowhere.

On April 5, eSellerate launched a new service: eSellerate Download Service (or eDS):
Customers purchase eDS for $4.99 per order, which locks in the download guarantee for one year. You receive $1 of the eDS sale amount.
eDS is, by default, "opt out." Every time someone clicks "Buy Now" on our site, a $4.99 charge is added to their bill. They can remove it, and I can change this policy to opt-in (I've since done so).
I'm not sure whether I like this option or not. Do I leave it on, potentially netting us $1/sale but also potentially scaring customers away ("I thought FTPeel was $19?!") xor (heh heh) do I turn this feature off, allowing only those customers who seek out eDS to purchase it? What real benefit does eDS offer when FSS uses the same application for both demos and registered copies?
Since its introduction on April 5, over 50% of our customers have purchased eDS.
P.S. Rosyna has thoughts too. We had a conversation today and both turned it off at about the same time. They're seeing an attach rate at around 90%!

From a conversation I had today:
erik: do you see a page or an error? andy: nope erik: do you see a page xor an error?
Friends always look at me oddly when they say "do you want to see a movie or go out to eat?" and I reply "yes." I try to explain to them what the exclusive or, or "xor," is, but they glass over. Needless to say, sometimes I use it. 🙂

Yay!
Congratulations. The taxing authority accepted this tax return on Apr. 13, 2004. Your DCN is (removed). TurboTax will now help you complete any follow-up paperwork that is necessary.
I'm done. 🙂

Question: Which rumor do you wish was actually true?
My Answer: I've left this open-ended, though I expect most answers will deal with Mac-related things. I haven't got any rumors I wish to be true. I don't need a PDA. I don't need a new portable. I don't need a new display. I don't need Apple-branded cars or Segways. I don't need Sony or Disney to buy any other companies. I'm happy with the way things are.

It's funny how everyone gets this one wrong. The latest to do so is Rick Ross, who writes:
Microsoft is shrewd and successful at using what is tantamount to "petty cash" for the monopolist to make its problems go away. I have noticed people pointing to the investment Microsoft made in Apple some years ago as a model that predicts success for Java here. My recollection of that event has not dimmed, however, and I still regard it as one of the cleverest ways Redmond ever killed multiple birds with one stone. For a mere $150 million, which was subsequently recouped with profit from stock value increases, Microsoft was able to pay Apple to abandon its commitment to Java compatibility, and they also got to keep their weakened competitor alive so that they would have a leg to stand on in their antitrust defense. As an added plus for free market competition, Apple promptly used the money to foreclose innovation in its market segment by shutting down all the Mac clone vendors.
Uhm, where to begin? How about "no, no, not quite right, no, not even close, no, and no. Oh, and no."? Gee whiz… Did this deal have anything to do with Java? Once again: no.

Hey hey, it's my MacAddict review of Consultant 2.21! Blast from the past. I had to look this up for one reason or another today and thought I might link to it here to save myself the trouble at a later time. Other reviews of mine (they don't list features on their Web site, unfortunately):
Scriptware 1.08, Fireworks 1.0, Fireworks 2.0, WebPainter 3, ImageReady 1.0, PhotoTools 3.0, Anarchie Pro 3.0 and Transit 1.1.1, DiskWarrior 1.0.2, Intellihance 4.0, Kai's Power Tools 5.0, PhotoGraphics 1.0, Virtual GameStation 1.2, and Spring Cleaning 3.0.
Of course, I may have missed a few in there… These trips down memory lane get longer and foggier every year, don't they? 🙂

Is anyone in the south Florida area looking for a smart geek? (Is there any other kind?) I know of one who is eminently employable. Drop me a line via email or, preferably, AIM, and I'll put you in touch with him. Said geek is a PHP/MySQL developer, Cocoa developer, Mac guru, Unix afficionado, and all-around bright guy capable of doing nearly anything. Best yet, he's fairly cheap! 🙂
P.S. Me? Nah. A friend. Really. A good, smart, close friend.

Question: Do you use your sick days liberally or hoard them?
My Answer: I'm a hoarder. I've never called in sick. I'm tempted to use one soon.

Sopranos was better last week - one of the best episodes ever. I've really only caught bits and pieces of Sopranos, but I did like this week's episode, and it spurred me to read up on "Wild Bill" Hickok. I thought Deadwood was a fake name until I read that page! Ha. Now I know.
I'm a tad depressed today. Rob once again played the role of Captain Reliability. A certain crazy gal moves 3000 miles away in 11 days, and I didn't get as much done as I'd hoped today. Pfffft.
