iPad 3 – I’ll Probably Pass

In the weeks leading up to the event, I'd mentally prepared myself to finally buy an iPad.

I think now I'm leaning the other way, towards still not owning an iPad.

We're a family of three, and we have more iPods than I can count (I regularly use three myself if you include the one that's hooked up permanently in my car), three iPhones (and a few sitting on a shelf), four Macs (Mac Pro, MacBook, MacBook Air, 12" PowerBook), and so on.

I'm finding that, given the size and weight of the MacBook Air, I simply never find myself needing an iPad. I like having an actual keyboard. I like having more storage space, access to my DropBox files, etc.

The only things currently in my "Pros" column are "can stream DirecTV to my desk so I can watch TV while I work" (you could argue I should just buy a Slingbox) and "can play some more games on it that I can't really play on my iPhone."

I guess I'll wait for the iPad 4.

P.S. I'd have probably ordered if iOS for the iPad had multiple user support.

Instagram – the New Blog

People used to post pictures of their cats and what they had for lunch on their blogs.

Then Twitter came about, and people used that to post pictures of their cats and tell everyone what they had for lunch.

Now, we have Instagram for that.

What's next in the cats/lunch series of technology?

GT Rebound and a New Bike

My wife is looking at buying a new bike. Her current one is a heavy GT model from Dick's Sporting Goods, and she's just about fed up with it.

She's leaning towards the Trek 7.3. It's a "hybrid" but more of a road bike than anything, with thin tires and relatively low weight so she can cruise around the trails at Presque Isle.

I still have the GT Rebound mountain bike (in black and yellow) that I got in 1998 or so in North East. It's still in pretty good shape from what I can tell - and I read some good reviews just now - but I'm considering picking up a new bike as well. I'm leaning towards "no" because I should still be able to keep up with the wife on my fat-tired mountain bike just fine.

Tempted to Buy this Keyboard

The Matias Tactile Pro is not only an "old school" keyboard for the Mac, but with the press of a button it becomes a keyboard which will type on your iPhone. Sweet - I do a lot of typing here on my Mac Pro and will get texts or whatnot from friends.

$200, though? Bah. I'd take one as a gift, but then again I think anyone spending $200 on a gift could spend it better, too. 🙂

I'm pretty happy with the simple aluminum keyboard I've got. I guess I'm not the keyboard snob some other people are.

Found a MarsEdit Bug when Setting a Different Date

Aha! I've finally figured out why MarsEdit will sometimes post something as "today" when I change the date to a few days ago.

Here are the steps:

  1. cmd-opt-L ((No shift - capital "L" shown only so it doesn't look like I or |.))
  2. Tab, type the number "3" (changing "8" to "3" for the date)
  3. Press enter or return.

The problem? The cell doesn't end editing so the date never changes from "8" to "3." I'd imagine it's possible to send an "end editing" message when the "Set Date" button is pressed, but maybe calendar widgets don't give you that chance. I imagine they do.

The work-around for now is to hit tab once more after changing the date, then press return.

Waiting on the Mac Pro Update

I'm now solidly in the "Will Buy a New Mac Pro when They're Announced" camp.

580+ days and counting.

C'mon, Apple. I'm not buying an iMac.

Five Training Rules

The Five Training Rules as posted by Caleb Masland at DailyMile are:

  1. Missed Workouts are gone. NO MAKE-UPS.
  2. If you are debating whether or not you need a rest day, then you need a rest day ((Substitute "ice cream" for "rest day" if you please.)).
  3. Train at your current level, not your ideal level ((I suspect that, truthfully, you should train at just a teeny weeny bit better than your current level.)).

  4. Aerobic Fitness > Numbers from a Track Workout.
  5. One Thing at a Time.

Leap Day 2012

I know it's just a Wednesday, and making Leap Day a worldwide holiday would be irresponsible and silly, but then again, why not? Who doesn't need a little more silliness in their day to day lives?

James Bond Theme by Tiny Helicopters

Uhm, so, yeah.

Monthly Parking Avaliable

I love when large signs like this have relatively obvious typos that go unchanged for months and months and months.

Red Wine Drinker

I've decided that, three or four times a week, I'd like to drink a small glass of red wine (finishing off one bottle per week). I'll drink late at night when I'm sitting on the couch to watch a little TV (typically around 11 or 12) as I settle down before going to bed. I've read enough good things about how a little alcohol can be overall pretty good for you, and among those, dry red wines seem to be the favored methods (and my favorite kind of wine to boot).

I'll start with two bottles (and thus two weeks) of Malbecs. I think they cost about $10 locally, which is fine. I don't think I'll ever turn into a wine guy per se, but I will probably find brands and mixes that I like. Of course, I hope to support some local wineries as well, but I think they make a lot of the sweeter wines, like pink catawba and stuff like that.

I welcome any and all suggestions and comments. Maybe there's a reasonable "wine of the month" or "wine of the week" club out there.

Malkin’s Coast to Coast Goal

This helped to make my afternoon quite fun.

Malkin's second of three goals (for a hat trick) in an 8-1 Penguins victory.

Ten New System Changes in Mountain Lion

Last one on Mountain Lion for awhile. Promise.

Ten exciting system changes in Mountain Lion:

  1. Sharing, sharing, everywhere (meh)
  2. Many computers, one account (Does that mean I can sync Keychains again?)
  3. iCloud-y documents (meh)
  4. Screen sharing: Now with draggable files (Good. I'll use that.)
  5. Multi-disk backup (Can't hurt. I should get another disk.)
  6. One-stop software updating (eh, okay)
  7. Accessibility (didn't even care enough to type the whole title)
  8. Picturesque screen savers (meh, I turn the screen off when I'm away)
  9. Gesture simplification and key commands (I always like good key commands)
  10. Dashboard gets some love (meh)

Overall: meh. Whatevs. 🙂

Mail in Mountain Lion

From MacWorld:

  1. Inline Find - Great
  2. Notifications in rules and selective notifications - Awesome
  3. VIPs - Woohoo!
  4. No more RSS - Took 'em long enough!

Love all the changes.

P.S. Get Cyndicate for your RSS reading.

Entrepreneurial Kids

I love commercials with entrepreneurial kids. I was always selling things as a kid - homemade pot-holders, baseball cards in my neighborhood, ice cream social tickets, candy bars - and was quite good at it.
